CHANEL – ‘Destination’ and ‘Apparition’ Illusion d’Ombre (swatches & review)

Hearing the words “CHANEL” and “limited edition” always elicits a somewhat conditioned response in me: an instant desire for the product(s). Lately, however, I find myself weeding through collections and honing things down to just the items which truly draw me in. I was therefore surprised that the culprits this time around were 2 blue eye shadows. Blue — a notoriously difficult shade to wear, but once you find the right hue, well … then the outcome is much different. Pavlov, thanks for the training – it paid off this time around!

ready for take-off with this CHANEL duo …

Included in CHANEL’s limited edition ‘Bleu Illusion’ collection, are 2 new Illusion d’Ombre eyeshadow shades: ‘Destination’ – an icy, pale silvered blue, and ‘Apparition’ – an intricate denim hue, both in that innovative gel/crème to powder format that the brand debuted in the fall of 2011. The silicone based gel-like formula is best applied using your fingers, although a variety of both synthetic & natural bristle brushes can also work – it all depends on the look & intensity you desire. Meant to be rather long-lasting, I find that you still need a primer underneath for optimum longevity, or else these shadows will definitely crease and/or fade.

  • wear time without primer: approx. 6-7 hours before any noticeable creasing
  • wear time with primer: approx. 11-12 hours before any noticeable creasing

Destination

Destination – is not an 80’s-throwback frosty light blue shadow, but more of an understated delicate and airy sky blue with pale grey undertones for added depth. The light dusting of multi-coloured & ultra-fine shimmer is not too obvious with this shade, making it an easy to wear daytime shadow, or perfect for lining the inner corner of the eye. An excellent counterpoint to its deeper toned companion.

Apparition – is a stunning and complex denim blue shade, with some indigo flashes in its base for added richness of tone. The fine multi-hued shimmer is much more apparent here, especially when seen in sunlight, yet still manages to stay somewhat subdued – not too flashy or overdone. I absolutely love how easy it was to build up the intensity of this shade, and the colour itself is one that will compliment all eye colours and skin tones.

Final thoughts: Buying sight unseen, is always a scary process for me; throw in an unpredictable item like blue eye shadow into the mix, and it can almost induce a paralytic fear, lol! Thankfully, I was not disappointed to add these 2 beauties to my Illusion d’Ombre collection of shades. Even though I would never wear them in the editorial style created for the runway show, I like how well they harmonize together without overdoing their “blue-ness”, and the formula itself offers numerous possibilities: using just your fingers, you can literally swipe & go for the easiest of looks (as I did here), or add more depth & drama by layering them over other hues. Versatile and rather long-lasting, not to mention totally wearable shadows – the only drawback is that they are limited and perhaps not as readily available. I’ll never understand why brands do this …

I picked mine up via a telephone order through Holt Renfrew’s Bloor Street store, but they are still showing on CHANEL’s website as well.
