Last September 2011, when CHANEL launched its trio of nail varnishes, ‘Les Jeans de CHANEL’ created exclusively for Fashion’s Night Out, us Canadian beautistas were left out in the cold … again insert long-suffering sigh. As a long time fan (and collector) of the brand’s lacquers, that this fact did not sit well with me, would be a gross understatement – but I eventually put the whole nasty business behind me. Then about two months ago, I was informed that these denim-inspired hues would be re-released IN CANADA, and my world was right again! Last Friday when these beauties made their debut at the counter, guess who was there to snatch them up?! Another plus (as though I needed any more incentive!) was that I was also able to use a CAD $15.00 beauty voucher, taking some of the sting out of the final cost – I love it when that happens! All swatches are with base and top coats.

#551 ‘Coco Blue’ is a gorgeous sky blue shade, made even more unique by the delicate pearly shimmer it keeps hidden at its core. The formula was slightly sheer, but nevertheless was quite easy to apply, flowing well across the nail and levelling off nicely. Two coats gave decent coverage, although there was still a hint of translucency, so I opted for a third coat here to make the look completely opaque. I found that as a result of the ultra-fine shimmer, some care needs to be taken in application, to avoid any visible brush strokes, but the extra effort is totally worth it in my opinion, as the end result is gorgeous.

#555 ‘Blue Boy’, is an enhanced cerulean blue shade, given a slightly diffused looking appearance, almost as though it’s being viewed through a filter. The formula was more of crème-jelly hybrid, with the first coat applying somewhat translucently, but gaining full coverage with the second layer. This was an absolute dream to apply, as it flowed and spread across the nail with the consistency of melted butter, levelling off perfectly and leaving an amazing glossy shine at the finish. Bonus: absolutely no staining upon removal.

#553 ‘Blue Rebel’, the final chapter of this trilogy, is a luscious deepened ultra-marine shade, that leans ever so gently into navy territory. Similar in formulation to ‘Blue Boy’, this lacquer applied like a crème, but left behind a gloriously insane mirror-like shine at the end. Once more, this flowed like silk across the nails, almost applying itself and levelling off perfectly smooth. While the colour may be dark, it still retains its blue purity, looking paradoxically both crisp and soft – most probably due to its cushiony appearance at the finish. I was so pleased to find that this too had zero staining issues … always a plus when dealing with blue tones. LOVE!

Final thoughts: Those of you who have come to know me, also know that I absolutely adore CHANEL lacquers and have been collecting them for over 20 years now (see my vintage CHANEL posts for reference), and I am so thrilled I was able to add these to my ever-expanding collection. While ‘Coco Blue’ is slightly more finicky to apply, it is absolutely worth it in my opinion, as it is such an original shade of pale blue. I went hunting through my fairly extensive nail polish collection to find duplicates of any or all three of these shades, and to my surprise, I had nothing that even came close … props to CHANEL for managing to create three completely new hues! As with ‘Les Khakis de CHANEL’ released for last year’s Fashion’s Night Out (previously reviewed here), this triad has already garnered rave reviews from many quarters, and I know why: gorgeous shades + amazing formula = 3 more CHANEL hits! Available for a limited time at ‘The Bay’ stores across Canada, don’t say you weren’t warned that these would sell fast!
