The star of CHANEL’s Printemps Precieux 2013 Collection, is without question the Poudre Signée de CHANEL – Illuminating Powder. One look at its intricately embossed surface will confirm what I’ve just said; along with the ubiquitous interlocked C’s, you’ll find several other symbols long associated with the brand: Mademoiselle Coco’s beloved camellia blossom, lipstick cases, lipgloss tubes, as well as fragrance and nail polish bottle silhouettes. Almost too much beauty to take in – and all this before you even touch a brush to the powder.
Bearing the ultra finely-milled properties of a face powder but including a subtle gleam as well, this oyster coloured illuminator can almost be considered a hybrid product as it not only serves to set your makeup, but adds an understated golden glow to wherever it’s applied. I was surprised by the size of the exterior packaging (fig. 1); measuring a whopping 4.5″ x 3.75″ (compared to, say, a blush box at 3.25″ x 3″), I was expecting something oversized to emerge, but it’s only 1/4″ larger overall than a regular compact.
The inner pouch differs from other CHANEL sleeves (fig. 2), bearing a flap that folds over the front and with an attached elastic band that slips over the back (fig. 3). Once opened, there’s a secondary pouch in the front that holds a wide & flat sponge applicator (fig. 4), with the larger opening housing the compact itself. A final protection comes in the form of a large black plastic (versus the traditional transparent) embossed inner seal (fig. 5), placed over the powder.
The raised surface of the Illuminating Powder showcases several well-known CHANEL products, and adds a beautiful as well as artistic dimension to its visual aesthetic, but it is the actual powder that is even more impressive; buttery soft and incredibly fine-milled, it leaves a stunning yet subtle gleam upon the skin – like a candlelit glow almost. Simply luminous, I tell you. I don’t bother using the enclosed applicator, as I find the spongy surface applies this powder too densely; I instead prefer using my #1 CHANEL Powder Brush which has the perfect combination of width, density and bristle flexibility for an beautifully diffused application.

Final thoughts: If you indulge in only one item from CHANEL’s Spring 2013 Collection, I highly recommend you make it this powder; with its neutral champagne hue and finely ground shimmer, it will never appear stark (like some highlighting products are prone to) and suits basically every tone across the spectrum. It can almost pass as a light veil of colour upon the fairest of skin tones, while darker skin tones will appreciate the spotlighted gleam it imparts. And if that’s not enough to convince you, well … just look at it!
