Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant – Limited Edition Collection

EA Eight Hour Cream (opener)

When I began reading Vogue Magazine in the early 70’s (yes…I’m THAT old) and in particular the beauty section, I remember the makeup artists of the time, all extolling the wondrous properties of Elizabeth Arden’s ‘Eight Hour Cream’, with the models themselves stating how they couldn’t live without this little jar of miracles – a product that could literally stop time, it seemed. Even at that tender age, I was already planning ahead for the time when I would want to start looking younger …

Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant – (CAD $20.00 30 ml) Created by Miss Elizabeth Arden in 1930 and used at the end of each week to soothe bruises on her beloved race horses, since its inception this cream has gone on to achieve cult status with both professionals and consumers alike. According to the company:

“An all-purpose cream that helps sooth, restore, calm and relieve chapped, cracked, dry skin. Soothes roughness, redness and minor skin irritation, even sunburn”

Although the ‘Eight Hour Cream’ is part of Elizabeth Arden’s permanent range of skincare products, the packaging seen here was created as part of the New York Beauty Limited Edition Collection, and features metallic silver and red exterior accents along with a unique art deco “8” pattern design, inspired by New York City’s legendary art deco styles.

The size of the jar is deceptively small, but you really need just the tiniest dab of this ultra-rich cream to see & feel results. With an inner plastic lid protecting the contents, the first thing I noticed was its gel-like amber colour, followed by the deep resin-lemony scent with just the slightest hints of camphor – although I don’t note that as an ingredient in the label. Highly emollient, this long-lasting and deeply nourishing cream goes on almost sticky-feeling (sounds horrible, but it isn’t…trust me) which quickly turns to an intense soothing sensation.

If you happen to live in a climate that can literally suck all the moisture out of your skin (Canadian winter, anyone?), this is a Godsend. For anyone who suffers from really dry skin, say hello to your new best friend. I personally LOVE using this in the evening before going to bed; applying just a dime-sized amount, I thoroughly rub this cream into my hands as well as my cuticles – waking up to the softest, most pampered feeling skin EVER. My hands actually look plumper & younger, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part.

Who this is NOT for:

  • anyone with paraben sensitivies
  • lanolin allergies
  • a dislike of products that are not immediately absorbed into the skin
  • fragrance sensitivities (for the original version only – also comes in a fragrance-free format)

Final thoughts: Now I completely understand why & how this ‘Eight Hour Cream’ has reached such an iconic level, and while I don’t know how well it would work on irritated or sunburnt skin, I have seen the result of this cream for and on myself, thoroughly convincing me of its effectiveness. What’s great, is that this is a multi-purpose kind of product, able to cross many barriers and considering its relatively low price point for what you’re getting, so worth investing in.

So now I’m curious … anyone else want to weigh in with their thoughts on Elizabeth Arden’s famous ‘Eight Hour Cream’? Let me know!
