There’s something strangely fascinating about peeling, and when that act comes in tandem with a beauty product, it can almost turn into an addiction. I recently took on the Elizabeth Arden 7-day skincare challenge using a number of products from the brand’s Visible Difference line (individual reviews forthcoming), and the item I was most curious to try, was the peel-off mask. Why? Because it promised immediate results, for one … which turned out to be true, but it turned out to be a total hoot in the process. Yes, a beauty blogger has an odd sense of fun. It’s true.

Elizabeth Arden Peel and Reveal Revitalizing Mask (CAD $44.00/US $36.00 50 ml/1.7 fl.oz) – an exfoliating ruby-coloured liquid mask that is applied to the face in a thin layer using the included rubber applicator, and then peeled away from the skin after 15-20 minutes. With an effective beta and alpha hydroxy acid combination in the formula, this mask promises to exfoliate and reveal a clearer complexion after the first use. There is a slight tartness to the scent, sort of like fermented grapes, and there’s an interesting cold/tingly feel upon the skin with the initial application – all which fade slightly before it dries. Once the mask no longer feels tacky upon the skin, it is ready to be removed (anywhere from 15-20 minutes), and it is done so from the jawline up. Any residue left behind is easily removed with warm water.

My findings: I freakin’ LOVE this. Needed to get that out of the way. First of all, you need to know that you don’t need to apply a thick layer (I learned that the hard way), as it will definitely take longer to try and doesn’t offer any increased benefits to do so. With the mask on, I was a little alarmed at my superficial “sunburnt” appearance (fig. 1) – definitely not my best look. Once the correct time had lapsed, I began by lifting the ends around my jawline (you can facilitate the process by smiling widely to create a gap in the mask to start the process), and with a small exception, I basically peeled the mask off in one complete piece (fig. 2) – so satisfying and COOL! What I was left with, was the freshest & most glow-y skin I’ve seen yet (fig. 3 – taken from my Instagram feed); even-toned, appearance of significantly reduced pores, and fine lines almost blurred away. I literally radiated clear, healthy skin – even my family noticed. With stellar results like this, it’s hard to resist not wanting to use this mask daily, but I’ve stuck to the prescribed twice a week regimen, and believe me, it shows.

Last word: Focussing just on the results I’ve experienced using this mask is hard to do, as the rest of the Visible Difference regimen I’m currently testing has a huge role to play in my skin’s appearance as well, but let me just say that even if you’re happy with whatever skincare routine you’re presently using, you owe it yourself to include Elizabeth Arden’s Peel and Reveal Revitalizing Mask, to that list. I’m not sure those with super sensitive skin will be able to tolerate the acid combo found in the ingredients, and so I suggest doing a patch test at the counter first, but for everyone else, I highly recommend this product. Plus, it’s just almost weirdly cool to peel something off one’s skin – now I know what snakes must feel like after they’ve shed that old, tired layer!
