Greek red Easter eggs are more than simply decorative; they are steeped in the traditions that surround this holiday, also known as “Pas-ha”. The custom at a Greek Easter, is for two opponents to each take an egg, and crack them together — the egg left intact ‘wins’ but there is a deeper meaning than that. Long a symbol for rebirth, eggs are dyed red (on Holy Thursday preceding Easter) to represent the blood of Christ that was shed on the cross. Cracking them together symbolizes opening the tomb of Christ and His subsequent resurrection.
In honour of the day, I bring you a mesmerizing red lacquer from Lancome, that was originally released this past winter and one of two limited edition shades created by the talented designer (and long time love of none other than Mick Jagger of Rolling Stones fame), L’Wren Scott.
‘Le Rouge’ is a deep ruby shade with hints of a burgundy claret in its base, and tons of super-fine red and golden shimmer throughout. The application is exceptional; fully opaque at two coats, the formula has an excellent consistency, flowing beautifully across the nail and basically self-leveling. Dry time was also quick quick, and I was impressed by the resulting glossy finish. This is a slightly blue based red, but will nonetheless suit every skin tone across the spectrum. Note how the top photo taken in bright light, brings out a more ruby hue while a flash (middle photo) exposes the inner flash of shimmer. Seen in a more indirect light (bottom photo), you get to appreciate its deeper burgundy undertone. All swatches are with Sèche Natural base coat, two coats of lacquer and Sèche Vite top coat.
Final thoughts: Given to me as a gift, this is a shade that can inspire lust in all who set eyes on it, and a covetous hunger for those unlucky enough to have passed on it! This is one of those reds that you dream of; deep, mysterious, sophisticated, elegant, modern & edgy…all at the same time. Under certain lighting, the colour combinations of the shimmer can almost make it seem like there is an inner pulse to this shade, making it come alive. There’s something really unique about this polish and I believe that it’s truly the sum of all its parts: the perfect red nail lacquer. Absolutely sublime!
