Blame Lady Godiva. It’s something we all wish for at one time or another: hair luxurious enough to drape ourselves in. I’m always on the hunt for that product that actually delivers on what it promises, without all the harmful synthetics most companies load their products with. I think I may have found it in the magic duo of L’Occitane en Provence’s Aromachologie Repairing Shampoo and Aromachologie Repairing Serum. Founded in 1976 by Olivier Baussan, L’Occitane continues to hold true to their philosophy that their products not only follow Provençal traditions but are made with the finest natural ingredients. Personally, count me in as a believer!
Created with naturally sourced ingredients, this ‘Repairing Shampoo’ also boasts a complex of five essential oils (angelica, lavender, geranium, ylang-ylang and sweet orange), as well as vitamin E and wheat proteins. What all this is supposed to do, is help to repair hair that’s dry and/or damaged (due to colour or chemical processing) and the regenerating properties of the complex are meant to strengthen and smooth hair fibers. The matching ‘Repairing Serum’ is applied as a leave-in treatment and offers all the benefits of the shampoo, as well as adding nourishment to your hair for extra smoothness, shine and frizz prevention.
Let me preface this review by telling you first about my hair type; long, lots of it although the individual strands themselves are thin, was straight before I began colouring (light blonde) so now I have quasi-wavy hair but which straightens easily nonetheless, and is quite resistant to being curled. My hair is is adaptable to being abused and seems to bounce back quickly (insert the sound of knocking on a forest of trees here) but that may also be due to how much I pamper and nourish it. Because I also happen to have oily hair, one would think I’d avoid conditioners and the like, but the colouring process has added a new dimension of dryness to my hair that requires me to add more moisture to it. Enter my quest for the perfect hair products, at least for me and my present hair needs.
This light greenish-yellow tinted shampoo which is neither too thick or thin in consistency, lathers quite well without over sudsing, and leaves your hair feeling soft after the final rinse, not ‘squeaky’. There’s a delicate herbal-like “green” scent to the shampoo, and I like how it’s not cloying or overpowering, nor does it have any hint of a chemical odour but smells, well….clean. Something about the scent reminds me strongly of those squares of ‘Marseille’ soaps you see piled up in soap/apothecary shops; there’s an old-world feel to the entire line.
The white serum has the same fresh and clean scent as the shampoo, and I feel it truly lives up to its claim. It is non greasy, and a little goes a long way; for my amount of hair, I applied a dime-sized amount and applied it from the mid length to the ends of my hair, avoiding the scalp and root area. Upon drying my hair, most fly-aways were practically non-existant and the resulting softness was amazing. The scent continues to gently linger and I find myself constantly sniffing the air around me with my hair’s every movement!

In keeping with their pro-environmental outlook, the company uses minimal packaging, sources organic ingredients and is a strong supporter of fair trade. I have visited two different L’Occitane stores to date, and I was pleasantly surprised by how helpful and knowledgeable the staff was, willing to guide me to exactly what I needed while also offering plenty of samples for me to try.
Available at all L’Occitane en Provence stores, the shampoo is available in 2 bottle sizes: 300 ml for CAD $22.00 and 500 ml for CAD $32.00, and I think it’s fabulous that you can also purchase a 400 ml refill bag for CAD $20.00 which makes your initial bottle purchase a worthwhile investment. Not mentioned in this review is the Aromachologie Repairing Conditioner which I did not purchase. Please feel free to visit the company’s website here for more detailed information. Overall, this purchase was a total hit for me!
