When I first heard of luxury hair oils, I assumed that it was a product for the unruliest of tresses, or those with severely hydration-depleted locks, so you can imagine my surprise to learn that I – someone with hair that manages to lean towards the oily side, even though it’s colour-processed – can benefit from using something like this. L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil Couture Edition (CAD $26.00 125 ml) – made with a nourishing blend of avocado and grapeseed oils, and coming in a plastic bottle with an easy to use pump dispenser, this lightweight and clear oil is meant to revitalize and hydrate parched hair, while adding suppleness to strands, helps to tame flyaways, and adds a rich gleaming overall shine. The scent is subtle, mysterious and evocative; I can’t place my finger on it, but I know that I’d buy the perfume version in a heartbeat – it’s almost sensual.

My findings: I’ve been using this oil for a couple of weeks now, and to say that I am impressed, would be the total understatement of the year. There are 2 ways I’ve found that work amazingly, especially if you colour process like I do; after showering and towelling-drying my hair, I dispense 2-3 pumps of oil into the palm of my hands which I then rub together to distribute the product evenly, then starting from the ends and working my way up almost to the roots, I run my hands/fingers through my hair for moisture that will be locked in before styling.

After using heat styling products (blowdryer, flat or curling irons), I use 1 pump of Mythic Oil warmed up between my hands, to run along the ends and midway up my hair, and only very lightly touching up the top of my hair with any leftover oil. The result: my hair looks healthy, vibrant, glossy, and controlled – no frizz in evidence, and I’ve noticed no adverse effect on my colour either. As this product is quite lightweight, there is no greasy feel left behind and neither does my hair produce any excess oil as a result of use – in fact, I would say that may hair somehow kept its style longer than usual, and looked relatively fresh even 3 days later. Last word: If someone with my hair type (coloured & oily-ish) can benefit from using Mythic Oil, I can only imagine what those with dry, frizzy, or even curly hair can accomplish. I am fanatical about moisturizing – my face, my body and my hair, and when you pamper your hair like I do, it shows; you can see and more importantly, feel the difference.
