Ask any woman what beauty item she wouldn’t want to ever be without, and the answer will inevitably be mascara. With the endless varieties available, this beauty staple becomes very subjective, depending on what it is you’re looking to achieve … I also believe that the hunt for THE perfect mascara is endless, but not out of reach either. That being said, this is technically my first foray into using a drugstore brand, as I’ve always sworn by the higher-end department store varieties to deliver the goods. I was finally curious enough to want to find out if there was a difference … read on to hear the verdict!
L’Oréal’s ‘Voluminous False Fiber Lashes’ Mascara is touted as being able to give you a “false lash” effect, and after having read a few online reviews, I decided to give it a shot. I have a fairly decent fringe to begin with: medium-thick, good length (but blonder at the tips), with a pretty decent natural curve, although lately I noticed that my lashes were beginning to look a little skimpier. There are a couple of culprits for that; A) age, which I can’t really do anything about, and B) the use of an adhesive for false lashes. The glue in question is the Ardell brand, and while it works amazingly well, the formaldehyde in it affected me adversely, significantly thinning my lashline – by taking a break from using any falsies, thankfully my lashes bounced back.
However, I do love the fuller look that false lashes provide and went on the prowl to find a mascara that can deliver something close. L’Oréal’s ‘Voluminous’ version met several of my requirements:
- a deep rich black hue
- volumizing
- lengthening
- curl-enhancing
- long-wearing
- smudge & flake-proof
Where it failed for me, was in how quickly it tended to dry, basically forcing you to work at lightning speed to apply several coats, and it also has a tendency to be slightly clumpy – I didn’t try brushing through the finished look, as I was concerned about pulling lashes out (mainly due to how quickly the mascara dried). A huge perk was how well it lasted, well over 9 hours – without any flaking, smudging or fading, as well as being fairly easy to remove at the end of the day.

In this closeup view of the brush, you can clearly see the “fibers” which help create a more luscious fringe. I found the brush fairly easy to manage, although I did find myself scraping the wand against the edge of the tube to try and flatten most of these little “hairs” out – I prefer to not have anything dangling from my mascara brush as I work it through my lashes.

Final thoughts: Overall, I am rather pleased – especially considering the fact that this is a drugstore brand. I don’t mind shelling out the big bucks for a product that will give me the results I’m looking for, but it’s so much sweeter coming across something that works equally well at easily a third of the cost. Several things may dissuade me from re-purchasing, however; I wasn’t happy with how quickly this mascara seemed to dry – you need to work FAST, and it makes applying a second and/or third coat somewhat tricky. The tube, while an interesting shape, has quite a few angles which may make it a little awkward to hold, not to mention the gold colour showing every fingerprint, and lastly, I found the packaging a little cheap-looking, but I knew going into this experiment, to expect something like this — although in all honesty, I prefer paying for the product than the exterior — but I am a sucker for a pretty bundle! My verdict? Well worth the CDN $11.95 I paid – no regrets!
