NARS has recently added 10 new shades to their cult-fave Velvet Matte Lip Pencil range, bringing the total to 28 colours in the lineup. It’s no secret that I’m rather obsessed with makeup (ummm…the blog?) and while I can spend hours selecting the right products for my look, I can also be equally lazy when it comes to my lips and tend to reach for something easy. That said, what can possibly be easier than a pencil? Well, probably several things, but you know what I mean.

Velvet Matte Lip Pencil (CAN $33.00/each) | Created with silicones in the formula for an effortless application and long-lasting pigmentation, these pencils are also infused with Vitamin E to provide nourishing benefits as well. The texture is creamy and glides easily along the lips, while the finish is matte but not the light-absorbing variety as there’s still a slight sheen left behind — much like actual velvet, in fact. As to staying power, you know the drill: the lighter the shade, the less it’ll linger. The deeper shades will fade to a light stain which can be a nice effect as well — just slick on a swipe of balm or clear gloss and BAM: new shade.
On a side note, it appears that Let’s Go Crazy is only showing as available through the NARS website, although it’s still worth a shot to check at your nearest counter just the same.
- Get Off – pink beige
- Intriguing – rose pink
- Do me Baby – chestnut rose
- Pussy Control – dirty lavender
- Dirty Mind – deep lilac
- Let’s Go Crazy – vivid pink
- Famous Red – bright pink coral
- Endangered Red – oxblood burgundy
- Lonely Heart – chocolate brown
- Unspoken – midnight blue
So we all know that François Nars likes provocative names, but Pussy Control? I guess it depends on your perspective … Of these 10 new shades, both Get Off and Unspoken are not rocking my world, probably due to how far outside my comfort zone blue is, and light nude/peachy hues seem to go all wonky against my skin tone. That aside, I find these to be some of the best lip pencils in the matte genre, as they not only apply easily but feel quite comfortable throughout the duration. If I have any gripe, it lies in the fact that you will get waste when it comes time to sharpen them (I actually scoop up the sharpened bits and use a lip brush to apply, but that’s a bit of a pain). Other than that, these have become personal faves and the large colour range makes it well worth investigating, that’s for sure.
