When OPI released their Burlesque Collection (another collaboration, but this one with the soon to be released movie of the same name starring Cher & Christina Aguilera), I was surprised to learn that half the collection would be glitters, but in retrospect, it does make sense given that the theme is ‘burlesque’….doesn’t get more theatrical than that!
I must admit that while the range itself is quite pretty to look at, I couldn’t help but feel like I’ve seen most of it before and as a result, I wasn’t all that motivated to purchase more than just the two colours I’m reviewing here: ‘Tease-y Does It’ and ‘Sparkle-icious’. I have a love-hate affair going on with all glitter polishes; love the look, hate the removal and so I have been putting off reviewing Sparkle-icious for just that reason and while the pictures show the multitude of colours that go into each of these shades, I certainly failed to capture the almost prism-like effect of the glitter/shimmer. By the way, both polishes were sold as a duo but you can buy them separately as well.
Tease-y Does It is a deep & luscious browned burgundy but what gives this colour such ‘oomph’ is the orange and magenta micro shimmer in it’s depths. The best I can describe this colour as being, is like looking at banked embers in a fireplace….it has that same almost lit-from-within look to it. That inner glow not only sets it apart from other wine/burgundy shades, but in my opinion, makes it THE standout shade of this collection. The flow was excellent, basically opaque with the first coat and left no visible brush strokes whatsoever. This was done with one coat of Debra Lippmann’s Rehydrating Basecoat, three coats of polish, finished with Sech Vite top coat. The only issue I found was that I expected the finished result to be a lot shinier than it actually ended up being, but that’s not enough to deter me from the fiery richness of this shade.
From all the glitters presented in this collection, Sparkle-icious was the main one that caught my fancy, probably because I thought the combination of colours was so unique. It has the same look and feel to it as ‘Mad As A Hatter’ from OPI’s Alice In Wonderland Collection, with the obvious difference being that Sparkle-icious is gold based while MAAH has a silver base. The glitter in both is multi-tonal with the same size and shape suspended in a clear base. Sparkle-icious has equal amounts of yellow, gold, blue and purple glitter which means that the entire nail gets covered fairly equally. I had no issues with spread or needing to move any glitter around, and I used the same combo as above: Deborah Lippmann’s Rehydrating Basecoat, three coats of polish and one layer of Seche Vite top coat although next time I would use two layers of top coat to give the nail a smoother finish. Clean up….well, let’s not go there, shall we?! Yes, it’s messy and more difficult than other polishes but I find that if I saturate a cotton pad with acetone and place it on the nail for at least one minute, it helps with removal immensely. The pictures here truly do not do this polish justice, however, as it is so much more glittery in person.
Finally, I decided to try Sparkle-icious over Tease-y Does It because the combo seemed to mesh well and while I like the look, I would layer just one coat of Sparkle-icious next time as opposed to the two I did here, as I feel the fire of Tease-y Does It got swallowed up by the glitter. The index and ring fingers have the two shades layered on while the middle and pinkie fingers have three coats of Sparkle-icious alone (please excuse the glitter fallout….told you it was messy!). What if any colours will you be picking up from this collection? Drop me a line to let me know!
