To wrap up the Katy Perry Collection from OPI (part 1 was reviewed here), today I bring you ‘Last Friday Night’ a blue glitter filled jelly, and ‘The One That Got Away’ a deep shimmery berry (seriously, OPI…..you have to start coming up with shorter names…). These two polishes are certainly more than unique on their own, but when Black Shatter is layered over them, you get so many effects happening all at the same time: glitter, shimmer, duochrome, cracks, holographic reflects……a smorgasbord to feast your eyes on! All swatches are with Sèche Natural base coat and three coats of lacquer, no top coat except where noted.
‘Last Friday Night’ is a bit of a trickster; looking at the bottle, you see a vivid & glittery sea blue shade, but application is a whole other animal. This is a sheer, almost dusty cornflower blue jelly polish, loaded with iridescent and holographic glitter, both tiny particles and larger hexagonal pieces. The effect is rather delicate and ethereal; more a ‘fairy of legend’ shade than something edgy. The formula is the thickest I’ve tried to date, but I found it surprisingly easy to apply nonetheless and being both sheer & glittery, it’s actually very forgiving where mistakes might be concerned. As with all glitters, removal was a touch more difficult, but not impossible.
Once you layer it with ‘Black Shatter’, the look is instantly morphed from princess bride to glam-rock chic! What I found interesting is how the glitter peeks out and flashes at you from between the cracks of the Shatter and the fact that the base is so light, makes the black that much more prominent, thus taking center stage. Note in the bottom photo, how much more pronounced the effect is with a layer of top coat to seal everything in.
‘The One That Got Away’ is nothing short of radiant; this is an ultra shimmery berry hue with a magenta cast and an interesting almost orange duochrome flash to it. I don’t have anything like this in my stash and I was absolutely captivated by this shade. It also seems to have bright pink glass flecks throughout, which are somehow suspended in the formula instead of sitting on top, giving it that ‘lit-from-within’ look that I absolutely love….it adds such incredible depth. Note how depending on the light, it can seems to go from an almost hot pink hue to an almost purple-y berry….simply stunning!
While the effect of ‘Black Shatter’ layered over this one may not be as pronounced as when layered over ‘Last Friday Night’, somehow I love how almost understated this look seems to be. This to me has more of a sophisticated edge to it and out of the entire collection, probably the duo that can be more easily worn for a diverse age group. Once again, a layer of top coat (bottom photo) just brings everything to life.
Final thoughts: Overall, I find every single shade in this collection quite unique in terms of colour; application was at times odd, with the somewhat ‘gloopiness’ of the glittery shades, to the almost creaminess of the other two, but they all seemed to just work. I really love the fairytale beauty of ‘Last Friday Night’ but the rich jewel-toned depth of ‘The One That Got Away’ has completely won me over. While ‘Black Shatter’ hasn’t totally converted me yet, I have to admit that creating constantly changing looks with it is fun….and addictive!
