OPI Matte Top Coat

OPI Matte Top Coat opener

When I first heard that OPI was releasing a matte top coat, my first thought was “don’t they already have something like this?” followed by “if not, then isn’t OPI a little late to the party?”, but as I happen to personally love this type of effect, none of that really bothered me as I was just eager to get the chance to play with this little lovely. Good thing too, because as far as these type of effects products go, this one’s a winner.

In order to show you the versatility of OPI’s Matte Top Coat and how it affects various lacquers – from solid crèmes, glass-fleck like shimmers, and even glitters, I’ve chosen 4 separate examples using OPI shades from the two latest collections: Skyfall (reviewed here & here) and Euro Centrale (reviewed here & here). I encourage you to click to enlarge the swatch photos to experience the full effect of each finish.

OPI Matte Top Coat

OPI Matte Top Coat (CAD $10.95) – an effect top coat that gives a “mattified” look to any nail polish it is applied over. Flowing exceptionally well with an easy density – neither too runny nor too thick, this cloudy-looking varnish goes on clear and within seconds it begins to turn your base polish into a velvety matte finish – a very tactile texture, actually. This is not a flat or one-dimensional effect, but somehow seems to bear a slightly frosted-glass look to it. Dry time is excellent as well, helping you & your nails out the door that much faster, if need be. Another plus to this type of top coat, is that is seems to erase any imperfections there might be found on your base colour application – smoothing everything out, as it were.

Note: make sure to wait at least 2 minutes after your last coat of base polish has been applied, for the best and most durable effect.

fig. 2 – The Spy Who Loved Me – I did not expect (but so totally love) how the matte coat seems to amplify the glass-flecked shimmer

fig. 3 – Goldeneye – the insane brilliance of this shade is toned down and given a more “fish-scale” look when mattified – so unique

fig. 4 – Polka.com over My Vampire Is Buff – when a matte coat is applied over glitters, it makes each & every piece literally stand out

fig. 5 – Gradient look using: You’re Such A Budapest (base), Can’t Find My Czechbook, OPI…Eurso Euro – there’s an Impressionist feel to a gradient mani that’s been given the matte treatment, and while this was my first attempt at such a look, I absolutely love how it turned out

Last word: You either love or hate a matte finish; I happen to fall in the former category. Don’t get me wrong; I do love a densely glossy crème, especially the vampier shades that are my weakness, but something about matte just gets to me. Another reason to love it, is how goof-proof this finish is – no waiting around for a shiny top coat to cure, which is great if you don’t have a ton of time to get your nails done. Then there’s how matte seems to slyly change the look of whatever varnish it’s applied over — watching it happen before your very eyes seems like an optical illusion and quite cool. While OPI may have waited to get in the game with this little gem, they definitely got it right, producing a stellar formula with an easy application. And let’s face it, adding OPI’s Matte Top Coat is almost like doubling your nail polish collection. Not bad, huh?
