OPI – ‘Vintage Minnie Mouse’ Collection (swatches & review)

I have a massive soft spot for anything Disney-themed and so when I first heard of this collection, I’m sure a part of me must have melted just a touch. The 4 shades of OPI’s ‘Vintage Minnie Mouse’ Collection are exactly what I’d picture Minnie wearing, that is, if she ever took the gloves off! Vibrant, girly and with a hint of whimsy, these hues are guaranteed to put a smile on your face! All swatches are with base and top coats.

A prized possession: Minnie’s autograph!

I’m All Ears is a slightly sheer hot-pink/fucshia leaning shade, filled with sparkling pink ultra-fine glass flecked shimmer in a somewhat jelly-like formula, that seems to have hints of a blue duo chrome flash to it. A hue that almost verges on being neon in its intensity, I applied 3 coats for the swatches here, but 2 gives excellent coverage as well. Self-levelling and quite glossy, it also bears that gorgeous “lit-from-within” glow that I love.

If You Moust You Moust is a creamy delight; a lavender pink shade with cool-leaning blue undertones, this applied totally non-streaky, ultra-glossy and in a perfectly self-levelling formula. Wonderfully opaque at 2 coats, I nevertheless applied 3 coats here for the swatches. I can totally see this colour as an awesome pedi shade come the summer!

The Color of Minnie is nothing short of pure LOVE for me! A vivid cherry-red shade absolutely brimming with a silvery-pink pearly shimmer in a crème-jelly hybrid formula, this almost applies itself. Totally self-levelling and bearing a superior high-gloss shine, the faint blueish cast of this hue adds a lushness to the base colour and makes it one of the best reds from OPI that I’ve ever seen. Coats applied: 2 – any more would be overkill!

Nothin’ Mousie ‘Bout It is a sheer rose effects-type lacquer in a thick suspension-like formula. Filled with lavender, gold, and pink micro-glitter as well as mylar flakes, it also has larger satiny ballerina-pink heart-shaped “confetti” floating throughout, although the latter need to almost be individually fished out and deliberately placed on the nail. I found it easiest to apply a coat, then go back and capture anywhere between 1-3 hearts to add to the finished look – not as easy as it may sound, but not the hardest either. The resulting end shine isn’t too bad, but this lacquer definitely benefits from added top coat to really bring out its sparkle as well as leave it smooth to the touch. The following swatches were all done with 3 coats.

Final thoughts: Personally, I’m happy that OPI left this collection small, as anything else would have taken away from its total “fun factor”.  The 3 shades are excellent stand-alone lacquers, with ‘The Color of Minnie’ having completely captured my heart – both for its colour as well as its formula. While I’m not the biggest fan of effects lacquers such as ‘Nothin’ Mousie ‘Bout It’, I can appreciate how it adds a new dimension to whatever it’s layered over and how cute the hearts are, although in my opinion, it’s just a bit too much effort hunting them out of the bottle; I guess you could leave it to chance, as the effect it leaves behind is rather pretty. Available starting early June wherever OPI products are sold — mouse ears & polka-dotted dress not included!
