Butter London: Fall/Winter 2012 Lippy Collection (swatches & review)

When I reviewed the first group of Lippys that Butter London originally released (here), my thoughts were mixed and somewhat ambivalent; I’m happy to say that this new collection has changed all that … for the better! Taking inspiration from several of the brand’s best-selling shades, Butter London is about to launch several new Lippy hues, all re-formulated and simply awesome! Matching your nail lacquer to your lips was never this easy – or chic!

The nine new shades of Butter London’s Fall/Winter 2012 Collection that I bring you here, come in two formulations: the glitters (Frilly Knickers, West End Wonderland, Rosie Lee, and Chancer) and the crèmes (Tea With The Queen, Toff, Old Vic, Come To Bed Red, and Union Jack Black). Covering the gamut from delicate sheers, subtle neutrals, siren-vivid, and startling editorial hues, there is definitely something here to suit all tastes, while the two groups of finishes all bear some commonalities:

The glitters:

  • translucent base
  • slightly sticky but with a good slip
  • no gritty feeling
  • warm vanilla scent

The crèmes:

  • deeper opacity
  • longer-lasting
  • thin formula – like liquid lipstick
  • initial slight tingling feeling (plumping effect?)
  • warm vanilla scent

Each Lippy comes with a spongy doe-foot applicator that picks up the perfect amount of product needed to be deposited, while the mid-sized wand makes it easy to work with as well. The shorter bottle is also a plus, turning this into a convenient size to carry in your makeup bag, although it does not detract from the amount of product given (0.24 fl.oz/7.1 ml). Another bonus is the addition of shea butter in the formula, ensuring your lips stay well-hydrated long after the product has worn off. Priced modestly at US $17.00/CDN $19.00 per Lippy, the quality here is comparable to that of higher-end brands, but at a significantly better price point.

Frilly Knickers Lippy and matching lacquer

‘Frilly Knickers’ is a sheer hue with a slight milky sheen filled with prismatic micro-glitter that feel smooth to the touch. Worn alone, its high gloss shine imparts an iridescent sparkle (think twinkling fairy lights), but it could also be layered atop any other solid hue to provide a fun, glitzier effect.

West End Wonderland Lippy and matching lacquer

‘West End Wonderland’ is a fresh new take on molten gold, and significantly more wearable. A slightly tacky sheer golden base, it bears sparse magenta flecks of of glitter than nonetheless feel smooth to the touch. Alone, it gives a warm beige-y cast to the lips, but layered over a solid hue will not only lighten the base colour, but add an extra zing of sparkle.

Tea with the Queen Lippy and matching lacquer

‘Tea with the Queen’ is a pink leaning crème nude shade in a formula that gives the opacity of a lipstick but with the easy glide of a gloss. A warm-toned fleshy hue, this gives a gentle & natural cast to the lips without ever looking chalky. A slight tingling effect was felt upon initial application, which soon faded, while the colour lasted an impressive 3 hours.

Toff Lippy and matching lacquer

‘Toff’ is an utterly amazing dusty rose shade, in the same hybrid lipstick-gloss formula of the other crèmes of this collection. Imparting more pigment than ‘Tea With The Queen’ yet still staying in the neutral range, this hue will definitely compliment all skin tones, giving your lips a super-charged yet still natural look. Absolutely love the wearable factor of this beauty!

Rosie Lee Lippy and matching lacquer

‘Rosie Lee’ bears the thicker texture of the other glitters in this collection, but the pink-tinged sheer base is filled with a multitude of micro-fine pink and silver glitter – all while feeling smooth to the touch with no gritty after effect. On its own, this will give a glimmering rosy cast to your lips, but layered over a deeper rose, it will serve to completely bring out and enhance its delicate shimmer.

Old Vic Lippy and matching lacquer

‘Old Vic’ was a complete surprise; what looks like an opaque cerise hue in the bottle, applies more as a deep peony shade on the lips, leaving a brilliant gloss behind and a rich pop of colour. The formula follows that of the other crèmes in this group, although its higher concentration of pigment gives it even more lasting power, going way beyond the 4-hour mark before any fading was noted. How juicy is this?!

‘Come To Bed Red’ (I don’t have the matching lacquer to show, but trust me when I say that it’s a definite match) has got to be one of the easiest red lip shades I’ve ever worn. The gloss factor alone of this candy-apple Lippy makes this a standout product, although as with other highly saturated hues, you could benefit from a matching liner to keep bleeding and feathering to a minimum. Still, this somewhat translucent-leaning shade is absolutely stunning and well worth investing in if you’re in the market for a non-fussy red lip. Lasting power: phenomenal with no staining left behind on removal.

Chancer Lippy and matching lacquer

‘Chancer’ was the second surprise here; I was sure that from the bottle, this would apply as a thick glittering shade (makes me think of Dorothy’s ruby shoes), but its sheerness was unexpected. Laying down more as a red wash of colour filled with even more red micro-sparkle, I love how it gives both a light-handed touch of colour while the glitter adds such visual interest. When I layered ‘Chancer’ over a solid red hue, this beauty really came to life and added a lovely deeper dimension.

Union Jack Black Lippy and matching lacquer

‘Union Jack Black’ gave me pause; an ultra-glossy deep ebony shade, there’s no denying the “WOW” factor of this Lippy, but this is definitely the least wearable hue of the bunch. Looking like liquid vinyl on the lips, you need just a few passes of the wand to give this completely perfect opacity and to say that application needs a steady hand, would be an understatement. Still, once on, I confess that I couldn’t stop staring at my lips – not for the faint of heart, I guarantee it! A liner is a MUST as this feathers very quickly and while staying power was excellent, I did notice that the colour in the middle of the lips was the first to fade. Granted, not an everyday hue, I can see how a light film of this colour working under other [deeper] shades would combine to create a whole new range of colour.

Final thoughts: As a consumer and consummate lover of beauty products, I have to give props to Butter London for actually listening to the people; in my previous review of the brand’s Lippy launch, I mentioned how the formula had already gone under revision – the original scent was more on the cloying and unpleasant side, a decided turn-off. I’m so pleased to state that this is no longer the case with these newer versions; a cross between butterscotch and warm vanilla is what you first detect, which gently fades away, leaving no annoying after-taste behind. The formula on the glittery group was significantly stickier, but I’m guessing that the glitter itself is responsible for that – needing a denser base in order to apply grit-free. The crème hues are all ridiculously easy-flowing, super glossy and long lasting (especially the deeper hues) and in colours that are totally wearable — with the obvious exception of ‘Union Jack Black’, of course; not my favourite here, as I’d be hard-pressed to know where I’d ever wear anything like that (other than a costume ball?) but here’s the thing: it has MAJOR impact! Overall, I can’t help but be impressed with this newer version from Butter London – just saying the word “Lippy” lends you some mod British style cred as well, right?!

Some of these shades are already available through Ulta, but feel free to check out Butter London’s site for more information, or follow on twitter/facebook for the latest updates.
