Guerlain · Aqua Allegoria Nerolia Vetiver & Refill

Nearing two centuries of fragrance creation, Guerlain recently released their latest in the Aqua Allegoria family, Nerolia Vetiver — a sparkling scent inspired by the Italian island of Ischia and its sun-drenched landscape. As if this glorious fragrance wasn’t enough, the Maison has taken things up several notches by now making these scents refillable … and that’s just for starters.

OPI Spring/Summer 2015 Hawaii Collection | A preview luncheon

OPI Hawaii event opener

Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending the launch of OPI’s Spring/Summer 2015 Hawaii Collection, held at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, Toronto. This occasion marked the finale of a whirlwind 2 days of events that began with the Elizabeth Arden Spring/Summer 2015 launches, followed by the Nicole by OPI Spring/Summer 2015 launch.

Upon arriving, I was greeted with gorgeous island-themed displays featuring the collection – a welcoming sight indeed, considering how gloomy the weather was that day. After quickly reconnecting with several familiar faces and some who were only names to me up until that day, I headed to the manicure stations where I chose That’s Hula-rious! – a fresh mint hue – as my mani du jour, a shade that turned out to be overwhelmingly popular with several attendees, from what I later noticed.

The tempo really picked up once VP and Artistic Director of OPI, Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, arrived and after welcoming us all to the luncheon, we sat down for a delectable Hawaiian-themed meal (which unfortunately I barely did any justice to, as I was hit with the migraine to end all migraines — still not sure how I survived the flight back home a few hours later). Capping off the day, I was able to sit down once again (see my previous interview here) with Suzi for a quick interview and to get the scoop directly from her on what we can expect to see from OPI.

I hope you enjoy the preview photos and interview.

Thank you to my wonderful hosts for inviting me to be part of such an incredible event

Welcome! Tell me about this latest collection

What was I going to do for Spring? I alluded to it when I spoke earlier and mentioned how women have arrived – we want to be more relaxed and comfortable, a common theme I also noticed from the Spring runway shows. Hawaii was the perfect inspiration; it’s an exotic locale and makes you feel wonderfully relaxed and alive at the same time – from the climate, the people, the food, the music and the colours.

As seen all over the various fashion shows, neutrals were once again dominating but with a twist; the new ‘midi’ look was shown where you leave the moon of the nail bare. Another way to wear neutrals is with a differently coloured free edge, or even applied as just one graphic line down the nail. The 70’s free-spirit vibe is represented by a mauve hue, a shade OPI hasn’t featured for quite some time, mint – very on trend and a perfect representation of Spring/Summer, the lavenders, purples, corals and pink – must have a pink, of course! Gold which I’ve also shown for the Holiday 2014 Collection, and metallics – which I’ll be showing more for Fall 2015. Rounding the collection out, are a lot of classics such as crèmes – which also happens to be the trend that I’m seeing coming up for future collections.

How do you go about selecting a country/city for a collection?

It usually begins with predictions/trend books from Milan and Paris, that look at the direction of colour in fashion, which in fact begins on the streets by observing people – a type of historical summary of colours and fashion, if you will. Then it’s up to the individual to translate this information to their own application, whether it’s in furniture, fashion, package design, colour cosmetics, or nail colour.

How does this process differ from celebrity collaborations?

To begin with, selecting a celebrity to collaborate with is not trend-driven, but more of my own personal choice. With Gwen Stefani, for example, she’s very much a part of the entire process and she personally chose the colours and finishes for the collection, even going as far as selecting individual glitter shapes from an assortment presented before her, for the creation of some shades.

The OPI shade names – how do you go about creating them?

First, I create the shades and then there are about 6 of us – from Nicole by OPI, Creative, Marketing, Purchasing, even Customer Service, basically the same team for many years now, that get together. We gather in a room with food representative of the country/city the collection is themed after, and then we brainstorm. The process can take an entire day and is very democratic; we all need to agree on the final name, but we also have fun with it.

I can just imagine the names that do NOT make the final cut!

That’s for off-camera! The blooper reel! We’ve have many good laughs over the years, believe me!

Can you briefly tell me about the creative process behind bringing forth a collection?

Taking the Hawaii Collection, for example, the entire process was very personal for me as it’s a place I’ve visited many times with my family. I was inspired by the ocean, the hula skirts, even the smells of the island that evoke images and which spark colour ideas in my mind. I also have to factor in which shades/colours the consumer will be attracted to as well as make sure it works in harmony with the current fashion styles. Don’t ask me to try to pin it down exactly; all I know, is that for 25 years this method has just worked for me.

This continued success and longevity just confirms that you’re doing something right!

[laughs] I hope so!

What territory, with regards to nail polish, has OPI not yet explored?

Definitely China, as I believe Chinese women are starting to explore and embrace beauty much more. With India, and while we previously released an Indian-themed collection, there’s a new middle class that is becoming more interested in – along with buying – beauty products as well. Another country is Brazil – latin women love and indulge in beauty products, and outside of North America and Europe, I feel that we need to venture out and include these women who have made beauty such a huge part of their everyday lives.

As a woman whose talent, drive and creativity is so highly admired in the industry, can you tell me what trend(s) you forecast next?

I continue to see textures; you’re going to see some new mattes from OPI for next year, as well as a continuation of this classic theme – such as crème hues. Shades such as mauve will be making a comeback and you’ll be seeing new shades in our Fall 2015 collection that have not been shown from OPI – or other brands – for a long time now. Nail colour continues to be important in women’s lives and it always amazes me how a bottle of nail polish can engineer a feeling of empowerment with women. Not everyone can afford a designer wardrobe, but a shade inspired from luxury fashion makes you feel a part of the entire experience.

Finally, do the rumours of a ’50 Shades of Grey’ collaboration have any truth to them?

Yes! The movie is being released on Valentine’s Day 2015, and the collection will include 6 shades – and not all grey, but a beautiful collection just the same! As with other collaborations, the author of the book was very hands on in the development and creation of these shades. This movie is not so much about sexuality, as it is about exploring our emotions and in the case of the collection, it also ties in with how colour affects our emotions as well.

I thank Suzi Weiss-Fischmann for taking the time to speak with me – it’s always such a pleasure!

BEAUTY SCOOP! So, you heard it here first and directly from Suzi Weiss-Fischmann herself: get ready for a 6-bottle 50 Shades of Grey Collection collaboration (and not all grey!), new textures and mattes for next year, as well as retro shades making a comeback for Fall 2015.

Nicole by OPI | Spring/Summer 2015 Collection preview

NOPI Blogger dinner opener

In my previous post, I gave you a glimpse into the Elizabeth Arden preview event I had attended – I should have added a ‘stay tuned for more’ at the end of that post, because my day did not actually end there; a couple of hours after that event, I was headed for the airport and along with my hosts, we flew to Toronto to continue the next round of activities – starting with a blogger dinner that took place early evening of that same day.

After checking in at the Thompson Hotel, the car service picked me up and I was brought to Gusto 101 in Toronto, to attend the blogger dinner that officially launched the Nicole by OPI Spring/Summer 2015 Collection (review/swatches to come). Unfortunately, Executive VP & Artistic Director of the brand, Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, had to cancel her attendance at the last minute due to personal reasons (although she was able to make a luncheon on the following day – stay tuned for that post, where I was also able to sit down and chat with her). Despite this unexpected snag, my colleagues and I (along with our wonderful hosts) took advantage of the opportunity to freely mingle & connect, eat endless amounts of food (I swear, the trays just kept on coming), enjoy copious amounts of good wine (naturally), explored the new Nicole by OPI Spring/Summer 2015 Collection at our leisure, and just generally had a great time.

What made the event even more special for me, was in finally meeting so many of the bloggers that I’ve known for some time now but have never actually met in person – in particular, Aire of The Obsessed, who has also recently experienced the loss of a beloved pet, as have I, and with whom I’ve forged a special bond. (Today also happens to be her birthday … Happy Birthday, Aire! )

I hope you enjoy these preview photos of the collection!

PS: If you haven’t already done so, please take a quick moment to vote for my blog by clicking on the ‘Vote for me’ button in the sidebar – last year, ommorphia beauty bar finished up as one of Canada’s top 3 Beauty Blogs, and I’d so love to be able do even better!

I appreciate every ounce of support you all give me – thanks so incredibly much!

Thank you to my wonderful hosts for inviting me to be a part of such an incredible event.

Yves Saint Laurent | The Movie Premiere

YSL movie premiere opener

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Montréal première of the biopic, Yves Saint Laurent, a film directed by Jalil Lespert and starring Pierre Niney of the Comédie-Française as Yves Saint Laurent, with Guillaume Gallienne of the Comédie-Française as Pierre Bergé, the long-time lover & business partner of Yves Saint Laurent. The movie gives insight into the life of the designer, beginning with his quick rise through the fashion ranks (he was the youngest ever to hold the position of Director at the house of Dior when Christian Dior passed away) to his often troubled and turbulent relationships. At times poignantly touching, at others almost uncomfortably gritty, this is a film that all fashion and beauty lovers should put on their must-see list.

For my look, I decided to go with casual chic: a 60’s inspired baby-doll black dress with black lace strategic inserts from Free People and strappy black suede Prada heels (borrowed from my daughter – yay for wearing the same size). Continuing the theme, I carried a small & ladylike black Gucci handbag (made edgy by the red leather interior) and apart from my phone and business cards, the only other items I needed were a Lulu Guinness hand mirror – gifted to me by my dear friend, Adina Bodana of a-england lacquers (see my side panel for swatches of all her products), and my lipstick for touch ups, the new YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats in #210 Nude Acoustic (LE) from the Fall 2014 Cuirs Fétiches Collection (review forthcoming).

The final touch to my ensemble, was a truly spectacular piece of jewelry, a Sapphô by Kim Smiley blackened bronze metallic lace cuff with Swarovski details and 18k plated magnetic closure (CAN $275.00), that was hand-made just for me by Canadian über-talent Kim Smiley (a detailed review on this piece will be coming soon). Not only was it the perfect accessory (and incredibly comfortable to wear), but made me so proud to be able to support this incredible woman.

With gorgeous displays of Yves Saint Laurent beauty products all around, a roped-off red-carpet for attending celebs (I apparently missed seeing them all, as I had already headed into the theatre), and bags of the tastiest popcorn to be had, the event was a huge. Once the movie was over, we were treated to a wonderful cocktail party (free-flowing champers and canapés) and left with fab little gift bags of YSL goodies.

WMCFW 2013 – A Cinderella experience …

WMCFW opener

This past March 21st, I was privileged to receive a day of fashion and beauty pampering at one of Canada’s most prestigious events of its kind, World MasterCard Fashion Week Toronto (WMCFW). This story began with a coach limo ride to the airport, a quick flight to the heart of Toronto, then another coach limo ride to the WMCFW tents – massive, heated & chandeliered structures. From the minute I arrived, I was treated like visiting royalty, being personally met & escorted at the door to be then whisked off towards the inner sanctum: backstage.

The heart and soul of these types of events, “backstage” is where the magic happens: hair, nails, makeup and finally, the shows –  experiencing just a day of the chaos & madness that takes place before a show, gave me new-found respect for the incredible effort and teamwork I witnessed from all involved, most notably the various PR whose job it is to ensure that figurative fires are put out, all needs met, and that everything runs smoothly and on time. Hats off to you guys – seriously!

My first stop was at the Redken hair station (the official hair sponsor of WMCFW), where my usually straight hair was given beach-y waves – I totally loved it, and the style seemed to only get better as the day progressed. PS: Thank you Rose, Adam & Tracy; a picture I took of us seems to have gone AWOL …

I was then taken to the Essie station (the official nail sponsor of WMCFW) , where it was my personal thrill to meet Essie’s lead nail stylist, Rita Remark – talented, gracious, funny, eloquent and drop-dead gorgeous – who then proceeded to give ME a manicure, recreating one of the looks she developed for an earlier show. Oh. My God.

But it gets better; Rita then asked me to unveil the nail look she created for Rudsak, a show I was to attend later on. Honoured (and dying) to rip the paper off the nail board, was a “moment” – made me feel personally connected to it all. Thank you so much, Rita!

Once my nails were done, it was off to makeup, where one of the Maybelline artists (the official makeup sponsor of WMCFW) added some dramatically thicker liner to my upper lids. Actually, she mentioned that she wasn’t sure if I needed anything done, as she thought I looked “perfect” — words a beauty lover such as myself, never gets tired of … lol!

Fangirl moment #2 came when I was given the opportunity to meet Grace Lee, Maybelline’s Lead Makeup Artist, and watch her in action as she gave a step-by-step demonstration of the look she created for the Rudsak show. An incredibly talented lady with a unique vision, and just so rocker-chic!

Time for the show …

How fitting is it that I, a beauty blogger from Montréal, attended a fashion show by a Montréal designer? Meant to be, right? Rudsak, the line created by Evik Asatoorian featured edgy outerwear that exemplified function, form, and beauty; suffice it to say that apart from the men’s pieces, I lusted after every single item I saw come down that runway.

Ending my day on a high note, I was then ushered into the private Sponsor’s Lounge for a celebratory glass of bubbly, accompanied by Carly (from NKPR) and Rita – and thus, my evening was complete.

A huge THANK YOU to Natasha Koifman’s team at NKPR – you guys totally rock! A special mention to Bunmi, who I did not get to meet (this time around) but has always been so incredibly supportive (and funny as hell), Katie – gorgeous, warm & so totally welcoming (we need to do lunch!), and Carly for not only “babysitting” me the entire time, but for being my show buddy! Thank you to Micah as well, for all your efforts in the planning stages.

WMCFW finale

A tired, but so very happy beauty blogger!

Last word: What an adventure! It was totally amazing to watch how a fashion show comes together, and seeing firsthand how the various departments – hair, makeup & nails, all work in tandem to ensure that no detail is overlooked, was eye-opening, to say the least. My first time seeing a live fashion show (the ones I participated in as a model when I was younger, don’t count!) was an extraordinary sensory experience: music, clothing, beauty, flashbulbs! Before I knew it, I was on a plane headed back home and left wondering if I had dreamed it all – but I have the pictures to prove I didn’t. The only problem? I want to do this again!

Once again, thank you to everyone involved for making this happen – giant panda hugs!
