Guerlain’s contribution to the world of matte liquid lippies are the recently released Intense Liquid Matte Lipsticks for Fall 2017, part of the KissKiss range. As with everything that this brand creates, I can assure you that no detail was overlooked in the development of this product and apart from ultra-saturated colour (which these definitely have), a comfortable wear was paramount — something that I couldn’t be happier to note, as my ongoing love-hate relationship with matte lipsticks so needed something like this. Thank you, Guerlain.
Intense Liquid Matte Lipstick (CAN $40.00/each) | Housed in long beveled tubes, the ombré design on the exterior is unique in that the top portion is black, while the bottom half is actually transparent so you can easily spot the shade you wish to reach for. The applicator is a softly flocked foot that picks up the right amount of product per swipe, and of a good size to effortlessly reach all parts of the lips (including edges and corners). The formula is made with hyaluronic acid to provide continuous hydration along with tiger grass for moisture and a comfortable wear. As with all Guerlain products, scent plays a huge role in the creation and as such, these are fragranced as well; a light soapy/floral that I find absolutely pleasant and which dissipates quite quickly once applied. As to the wear, all perform beautifully and have opaque coverage from the get go, with a luxuriously creamy feel that’s not drying upon the lips at all — but do bear in mind that as their name implies, the finish leans more ‘velvet’ than full-on matte, so don’t expect them to fully dry down. Personally, I find this finish way more flattering as it gives that editorial look without overly emphasizing lip lines (of which I have plenty), and avoids that desiccating feel as well.
- M06 Charming Beige – perfectly balanced rose nude
- M71 Exciting Pink – blue based carnation rose
- M41 Appealing Orange – soft tangerine
- M25 Seductive Red – rich true red
- M69 Attractive Plum – deep plum
As I stated at the top, matte lippies and I have not always agreed; for starters I’m not a fan of anything that highlights the (too-many-too-count) lip lines I have and dryness in that area is something I prefer to avoid. What makes these Intense Liquid Matte Lipsticks stand out for me is the feel: comfortable, really & truly comfortable. That they wear beautifully and fade to a lighter stained version of themselves is also a plus. The only negative I can think of (apart from their significant price point), is that more shades need to be added to the lineup, although most of the colour groups are well represented just the same. Verdict? So worth investing in.
