CHANEL · Rouge Allure Ink, Gris Obscur & Bi-Phase Makeup Remover

CHANEL recently released their latest lip products, Rouge Allure Ink, a matte liquid lip colour that might be a little late to the party, but then again, this brand will always beat to its own drum. Slipped in with this collection is 538 Gris Obscur, a darkly brooding nail polish in a shimmering slate hue, a colour that not only has Fall written all over it but sits comfortably in my wheelhouse of deep & vampy shades. The last item I received was the Le Bi-Phase Visage makeup remover, a product which turned out to be quite timely in my swatch fest.

Rouge Allure Ink Matte Liquid Lip Colour (CAN $43.00) | Housed in a glass bottle, I was initially surprised by how small it is (in comparison to other lip products from the range), but it’s comfortably sized just the same and appears to hold a good amount of product. The flocked applicator has a unique bevelled flat paddle-like shape that makes it easy to scoop the colour out, as well as deposit it quickly and easily all along the lips with minimal fuss. Bearing a lighter version of the typical rose scent that CHANEL is known for, this appears to dissipate fairly quickly after application — good to know for anyone with sensitivities.

The ‘melt-away’ formula is composed of a specific wax that is meant to impart softness, suppleness and a velvety feel, while jojoba oil in the mix delivers moisture, hydration and protection. Other active ingredients include:

  • sappan wood
  • matcha green tea
  • sweet almond oil
  • vitamin E derivative

Calling this a matte lip product, however, might be a touch misleading; while it does not have the brilliance of a gloss, it definitely does not come to that flat & light-absorbing finish that’s typical of what we think of when we hear ‘matte’. Something else to note is that the colour never fully dries down either, displaying a slight sheen upon initial application that can then be lightly blotted for a more matte-like effect, if desired. On the plus side, the shades have an incredible buttery-smooth feel — both during application and throughout the wearing, along with excellent staying power; Amoureux, the lighter of the two shown here naturally lasted less but still left a rosy pigment behind, while Luxuriant went on easily for 7+ hours and left a much deeper stain behind.

If you’re like me and love the look of a matte lip but hate the desiccating feel that most leave behind, then Rouge Allure Ink is a beautiful compromise; applies like a gloss, is pigmented like lipstick but dries down to a semi-satiny finish, and all while leaving lips feeling hydrated, both during & long after. I’d call that a win-win. BONUS: applying a matching lip pencil to the entire lip before applying your chosen Rouge Allure Ink shade will not only increase the longevity, but intensify the colour.

CHANEL · Le Bi-Phase Makeup Remover

chanel-bi-phase-2

Le Bi-Phase Anti-Pollution Makeup Remover (CAN $53.00) | A dual phase face makeup remover that combines known anti-pollution properties in the formula to deliver effective cleansing and protection at the same time.

Comprised of two phases each of which contains one of the key active ingredients, this lightly (and pleasantly) scented makeup remover needs to be shaken before using, turning it into a pale blue milky solution. The water phase contains blue micro-algae with known de-polluting strength, while the emulsion phase holds the moisturizing and fortifying properties of marine salicornia extract. Using a dry cotton pad to apply it to the skin (avoiding the eye contour area), it effectively removes all traces of makeup without leaving behind any greasy feel — no further rinsing needed, plus you have the added benefit of knowing your skin is left nourished and protected from external aggressors.

chanel-le-bi-phase-chart

After putting Le Bi-Phase Visage to the test, I have to say that I absolutely LOVE how my skin felt after using it to remove my makeup; soft & hydrated without that tight-skin sensation. That being said, it can also become quite the pricey investment if you wear a full face of makeup that needs removing daily (unless cost isn’t a factor for you — then by all means, go to town), so I’ve come up with a couple of solutions. In order to maximize the product, I actually cleanse with either a skin oil beforehand then go in with Le Bi-Phase, or use a less expensive micellar water cleanser first to remove the bulk of my makeup, then follow up once again with Le Bi-Phase. This way, not only am I ensuring my skin is thoroughly cleansed, but left nourished and protected afterwards. BONUS: I used Le Bi-Phase to remove the Rouge Allure Ink swatches and it not only worked like a charm, but left my lips feeling totally hydrated afterwards.

538 Gris Obscur (CAN $32.00) | A medium-sheer charcoal grey base hue that’s filled with steel-tinted ultra fine shimmer particles that can display a slight prismatic effect seen in direct light. The formula is a crème-jelly hybrid and applies in a self-levelling way without any pooling at the cuticles or nail edges, and leaves behind a cushy gloss finish – but I feel it totally benefits from a top coat to really make it stand out. Interestingly, the shimmer seen in the bottle doesn’t really show up as strongly when seen in natural/indoor lighting but does serve to add depth of tone and a nice edgy flair to this shade. BONUS: non-staining upon removal.

The formula is in CHANEL’s newly rebooted version, which is meant to provide long-lasting & chip-free wear with a high powered shine. While I’ve read of some people mentioning that CHANEL polishes chip easily on them, I personally have never had any problems in that area, as polish in general (including CHANEL) lasts like iron on my nails. If there’s one area I feel this brand needs to work on where nail lacquers are concerned, then I would say it’s with the brush shape and while I had no issues here, I would still like to see them come out with a brush that is more chiselled and tapered (along the lines of Dior or Guerlain).

Coats: 2, plus Le Gel Coat top coat

I really like how meticulous and well-thought out CHANEL releases are; just because everyone is releasing a certain type of beauty product, doesn’t mean that CHANEL jumps on the bandwagon, but rather the House takes a wait & see approach — then comes up with their own spin. Rouge Allure Ink are lovely, albeit a far cry from matte (more along the lines of the new NARS Velvet Lip Glide) although they make up for that with an incredible lip feel. Makeup Removers have been getting more comprehensive and if you’re in the market for a product that throws in extra skincare benefits, then you may want to give Le Bi-Phase Visage a try. And Gris Obscur … grungy, sophisticated, sexy and modern. Plus it’s a fabulous alternative to black and one that upon removal, will not leave your nails looking like you’ve been digging around the garden. Only killer gorgeous vibes here.

Victoria Beckham · Estée Lauder Collection

estee-lauder-x-vb-opener

Victoria Beckham recently collaborated with venerable beauty house Estée Lauder to create a bespoke makeup collection that’s oh-so-worthy of the name “Posh”. This capsule collection features such elegant detailing as fluted leather and/or metallic accents on all the casings, glam old-world snap closures, and a well curated colour palette.

The ever brilliant Victoria (she of the brooding gaze, luxury fashion line and oh yes, her drop-dead sexy soccer-player husband, David Beckham) unveiled these lovelies after her recent New York Fashion Week runway show, where the products were used on the models as well. Not surprisingly, the entire collection literally sold out within hours soon after that. Launching October 1st in Canada, my Spidey-sense is telling me that the same frenzy will occur here, so consider this a personal head’s up.

The collection itself is not overwhelmingly large and neither does it deliver up any ground-breaking new colours. What you’ll find instead are shades that are (for the most part) highly wearable along with an unparalleled quality to match — which is a good thing, as make no mistake about it:  much like Victoria’s eponymous fashion line, these pieces are all quite pricey. I was kindly sent The London Look to test out and from the get-go, it was instant infatuation for me, as not only are these shades well within my comfort zone, but I can finally add the Modern Mercury Highlighter to my beauty arsenal (more on that further down).

Morning Aura Illuminating Crème (CAN $115.00) | A hybrid-type product, this is a combination moisturizer/primer/illuminator all rolled into one. Unscented, it’s dispensed via a pump system and has several application methods:

  • used all over
  • worn alone & apart from moisturizer
  • mixed in with foundation
  • over foundation on strategic areas of the face (upper cheekbones, cupid’s bow, etc)

The texture feels initially dense but spreads easily along the skin, leaving a buttery feel once absorbed, with no greasy residue. The radiance it leaves behind is more of the subtle and not disco-ball variety; think the luminosity of a healthy-looking & young(er) complexion. On days when my skin is behaving, I actually use this solo and love how it just adds a light touch of evenness all over, while still managing to both attract and reflect light from my face (what sorcery is this?). Most days, however, I prefer wearing Morning Aura underneath my foundation to help give my skin a little boost.

Modern Mercury Highlighter (CAN $78.00) | Victoria Beckham is as much a beauty fiend as you or I, and she allegedly even trolls eBay for select items (can you imagine?). When creating her highlighter, she also knew exactly what she wanted: a reboot of Estée Lauder’s cult shade Modern Mercury, but reinvented in this new stunning packaging.

For those of you (like me) that missed out on the original (although I do happen to own the other two that followed – Shimmering Sands & Topaz Chameleon), there’s something quite magical going on with this highlighter. For starters, the formula is a gel-to-powder texture which basically means that it almost feels hydrating, but applies dry. The pale rose-gold particles are ground incredibly fine, enabling it to fall smoothly and without any chunking or patchiness and while insanely pigmented, you still have options to work with; a fan brush can help you apply a whisper-thin veil of colour, or you can easily build it up to a mirror-like intensity by picking up more product and/or using a denser brush. All I know is that Modern Mercury can be summed up like this: HOLY MOTHER OF ALL HIGHLIGHTERS.

(Seriously though, I feel like my swatches do not even begin to do this beauty justice)

Black Myrrh Eye Ink (CAN $55.00) | Apart from the palette, there are 3 individually packaged eye shadows in the collection (Charred Emerald & Bitter Clove Eye Metals), although Black Myrrh is the only one in the Eye Ink format. Created in a pressed gel-crème formula, this sooty black shade bears a high level of shine and pearlized particles, and can be worn either dry or damp. Stating that she wanted to create a “sexy, sweaty eye” (although to be honest, I’m pretty sure sweaty & sexy will never be an eye look I can pull off), I’m guessing she’s alluding to that slinky disheveled makeup look we all fantasize about having after l’amour. But I digress …

Black Myrrh (don’t you just love that name?) applies with the same glide and smoothness seen on Modern Mercury, but at a much more intense level. Easily blended and buffed out for a watercolour-like effect, or layerable for high-voltage impact, I find it works better over something to adhere to such as a primer, in order to keep the colour pristine and in the case of oilier lids like mine, from creasing.

By the way, this is the shade I always picture VB as wearing – sooty & smouldering.

Blonde Gold Eye Foil (CAN $45.00) | One of two Eye Foils in the collection, Blonde Gold is unlike anything else I have in my beauty stash; purported to be a ‘liquid eyeshadow that delivers a high-shine vinyl-like finish even after it’s dried’ is a close description but not without a learning curve as well. The texture feels slightly cooling upon initial application and when swatched heavily, the brilliance is basically blinding – I’m fairly certain you’ve never come across an eyeshadow like this: white-gold coloured that also contains irregularly shaped prismatic pieces. There’s a short bit of time to play before it sets, but don’t expect any easy blending or buffing out – that’s just not going to happen.

After experimenting with Blonde Gold a bit, I finally found my preferred way of wearing it: patted on over eyeshadow and along the centre of the mobile lid to add the most amazing pop of reflection. Another easy way to wear this shade is as a highlighter at the inner eye corner, but there are also more editorial methods for those brave enough, such as along the browbone for a truly unique highlight lift or even lightly swiped along the upper cheekbones for a one-of-a-kind shard-like effect.

Brazilian Nude Lipstick (CAN $55.00) | One of two shades in the collection (the other is Chilean Sunset, a searing red-orange hue), this is a creamy gorgeous neutral that has a perfect mix of both cool & warm undertones to be easily wearable by a broad range of skin tones. The casing is black (the other shade has gold casing) and bears the same fluted texture as the rest of the pieces, but surprisingly the actual size of the lipstick seems a little smaller than what I’m used to (not that it affects the product in any way, however).

Finding the right nude to suit one’s skin tone can be as difficult as finding an exact match in foundation, and while I have my favourite nudes, I confess that none climbed to the top of the list as fast as Brazilian Nude. Good coverage, non-patchy, and with a hydrating feel, there’s everything to love about this one (I do wish it had slightly longer staying power than the current 4+ hours I manage to get, but that’s to be expected with a shade in this colour family).

Further to the above, I also picture VB wearing this exact shade to match the sultry dark eye.

I have no doubt that this collection will sell out lightning-fast; for starters, there’s the cachet of owning something created by Victoria Beckham. But at the end of the day, if a product doesn’t perform, then no amount of celebrity endorsement can save it. Thankfully, the items I was sent are not only of the finest quality, but you might even say that they’re over-achievers — that’s how beautifully they deliver. If forced to pick favourites, then I’d have to say that Modern Mercury is a must-have and if you’re a neutral-lover like me, then Brazilian Nude is for you. I’m also really attached to Morning Aura as it’s the primer I reach for the most lately. Without having tested the rest of the range, I can’t offer up my thoughts, but if these selections are anything to judge by, then I’m fairly confident that you can’t go wrong with anything from this entire collection. All that being said and factoring in the luxe prices, there’s nothing ground-breaking here colour-wise, but I suspect for those beauty fiends out there who also happen to be collectors (guilty), you’ll definitely be wanting your piece of Posh Spice.

Ciaté London · The Fun Palette

Ciate Fun Palette opener

Ciaté London recently introduced 3 new eyeshadow palettes, and I was kindly sent The Fun Palette to test out. This has 9 eyeshadows gathered together, with the upper tier comprised of colours that are so totally outside of my usual neutral-loving comfort zone, but I decided to do what the title says: let go and have FUN. Plus there’s still 5 nude-themed shades on the bottom (and centre) level to act as my safety net … just in case I end up having way too much fun & need some grounding.

Ciate Fun Palette cover

The Fun Palette (CAN $42.00) | Made in Italy, the quirky & bold holographic print on the lid opens to reveal a full-size mirror and 9 buttery, silky soft eyeshadow shades (and that includes those with shimmer). I did find there to be powdery kickback raised when swirling brushes through them, but thankfully that doesn’t translate as fall-down on the skin — just make sure to tap off any excess from your brush first just the same. Made with something called Double Dose™ – pigment that’s formulate to blend effortlessly, these eyeshadows can also be applied with a dampened brush for an almost ‘molten’ effect. Applied over primer, the shades all retained their full colour without fading until removed. The shade breakdown:

Top row:

  • brilliant cobalt, satin
  • grape-tinted purple, metallic
  • emerald green, metallic
  • fuchsia pink, metallic

Bottom row:

  • burgundy, matte
  • champagne, metallic
  • bone, matte (centre hue)
  • camel, matte
  • gold bronze, metallic

Ciaté London has been steadily gaining ground here in North America, and with good reason; the performance & quality of the products is excellent, the packaging is lovely and travel friendly, and the range priced affordably enough to be considered accessibly by most. I’m not sure if all the products are available in-store or just online, but I’m impressed enough to want to check out more. What makes The Fun Palette stand out for me, is that Ciaté was savvy enough to mix wearable shades in with the bold ones, and therefore turning the palette that much easier for the colour-phobic (a tad excessive, but definitely applies to me) to experiment with. Then again, it’s only eyeshadow and not permanent ink, am I right?

Givenchy · Couture Edition Le Rouge, Prisme Libre & Khôl Waterproof

givenchy-fall-2016-opener

Luxury beauty brand Givenchy has been steadily climbing onto people’s radar, releasing not only top-tier products and unique innovations (they’re the creators behind one of the first ball-shaped mascara brushes), but also putting out some of the most exquisite packaging details. The finely rendered magnolia blossoms decorating the genuine leather of these Couture Editions turns them each into a display-worthy objet d’art, but it’s the performance of the products that makes them even more amazing, in my opinion.

MAC x Star Trek Studio Nail Lacquer

mac-star-trek-nail-polish-opener

In celebration of the original tv series Star Trek’s 50th birthday, MAC has teamed up with the franchise and released a limited edition collection based around 4 key female characters from the show (Lt. Uhura, Deanna of Troi, Seven of Nine, and Vina the Orion girl). At the collection’s media pre-launch that I attended back in May, I was totally drawn to the nail polish trio where all 3 shades immediately made me think of Uhura and her glam talons that you just couldn’t help but notice in each episode. Sporting chrome and glitter like it was nobody’s business, that woman certainly went where no other woman had gone before.
