CHANEL · Ombre Première Eyes Collection 2017

CHANEL is poised to launch the Ombre Première Eyes Collection 2017, consisting of new shades & products for eyes and brows, along with two new brushes. Lucia Pica, Global Creative Make Up and  Colour Designer for the brand, has gone back to the drawing board re: the formulations, because even as a lifelong devotee, I was unprepared for how amazing everything would turn out to be. Consider this my beauty love letter to CHANEL.

Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow (CAN $40.00/each) | Available in 16 shades that come in a variety of finishes (matte, satin, metallic) only four of which are limited edition. The formula is highly pigmented and feels almost creamy to the touch, yet blends absolutely effortlessly along the skin without any powdery kickback or fall down. The concept behind this collection is that all shades can be worn a number of ways: singly to layered — whether with each other, or even with the Longwear Cream Eyeshadows. Staying power (over primer) is excellent, with the colour staying true until removed. Each also comes with 2 mini brushes that surprisingly, work quite well.

  • 16 Blue Jean (satin, limited edition) – rich denim blue with ultra fine shimmer
  • 18 Verde (satin, limited edition) – deep forest green with ultra fine shimmer
  • 20 Carbone (matte, limited edition) – sooty carbon black
  • 28 Sable – satin, champagne beige with ultra fine shimmer
  • 32 Bronze Antique – satin, medium tone bronze with ultra fine shimmer

I own most of the brushes CHANEL has produced and what’s more, continue to use them daily. Not only are they some of my favourites, but they also have proven themselves through countless washings — retaining their shape and performance time after time. So it was with great excitement that I dove in to trying these new brushes, although I’d be lying if I didn’t add how skeptical I was about the whole retractable part. Turns out I was wrong, and I’ve now incorporated these into my makeup sessions as well. By the way, I suggest playing around a bit with removing the caps & extending the brushes, as that bit takes some getting used to.

Retractable Dual-Tip Eyeshadow Brush (CAN $57.00) | Perfect for travelling with, this dual-ended brush has a flat paddle-style brush on one end and a fluffy blending brush on the other. Based on the same principle as that of a retractable lip brush, the wand here is significantly longer size-wise (basically like a full sized brush when fully opened up) while the removable caps ensure your brush stays pristine. Quality-wise, the bristles feel quite soft and work beautifully for application.

Retractable Dual-Tip Eye-Contouring Brush (CAN $57.00) | Both ends of this brush do an amazing job for smudging colour in and the larger side can even do some precision blending work (especially for smaller lids or along corners). The best part is that by investing in both, you get 4 brushes in total at a fraction of what it would cost to buy them separately.

Ombre Première Longwear Cream Eyeshadow (CAN $40.00/each) | Available in 8 shades with only one (816 Obscur, not shown) listed as limited edition, these are cream eyeshadows with definitive pigmentation and an ultra creamy texture. Described as having a satin finish is fairly accurate, but what that doesn’t tell you is how incredibly fine & complex the shimmer in each happens to be. Easily blended out before they set, you can also layer these under powder eyeshadow for an extra level of depth and staying power, or even worn over powder eyeshadow to provide an added ‘pop’ of colour. Tip: if planning on blending out, I suggest working one eye at a time to ensure the colour doesn’t set before you can get to it. By the way, the included little brush works well, but fingers do an even better job.

  • 804 Scintillance – champagne with a warm undertone
  • 808 Lilas D’Or – cool based baby pink
  • 810 Pourpre Profond – rich & warm russet
  • 814 Silver Pink – taupe with a pink cast (not sure how silver fits in ∗shrugs∗)

Basically a re-booted version of CHANEL’s Illusion d’Ombre cream eyeshadows, the only thing in common between the two is the round container … that’s it. From the moment the Illusion d’Ombre launched, I made it a mission to collect them all and while I’ve used them quite extensively, there have been many misses amongst the hits. For starters, the formula on the original 6 shades appeared to shrink within a week of opening, although it hasn’t affected the actual performance all that much. Secondly, the texture on the Illusion d’Ombre shades is ‘spongier’ which makes it somewhat tricky to pick up the product and apply it with ease. The Ombre Première, on the other hand, are what cream eyeshadow dreams are made of: smoothly applying, pigment rich, long lasting, and with such a lush depth of colour.

Le Gel Sourcils (CAN $41.00/each) | Available in 3 shades (360 Blond, not shown) this is a gel brow setting product that’s applied with a small spoolie brush. Both the Blond & Brun shades can be worn solo for when you just want a touch of colour + taming, or can be layered with a brow pencil for even more definition, while the Transparent shade is universal and perfect for slicking those strays down and keeping everything in place. Personally, both of the shades shown here have been the ones I’ve been reaching for since their arrival and I’m loving the result: natural-looking without any clumping or flaking. I must confess that last year’s powdered version has been a bit of a disappointment as I found the texture much too hard to work with, but these? Total love.

  • 350 Transparent – clear
  • 370 Brun – medium brown

If what I’ve seen of this collection thus far is anything to go by, then CHANEL has a winner. Make that, winners. The powder eyeshadows are in a word: stunning, and even if I weren’t inclined to wear blue, I’ll be totally rocking this shade and doing my best to channel Kristen Stewart’s moodiness. The cream eyeshadows are EVERYTHING I wanted the Illusion d’Ombre to be … and more. As to the brushes? Total thumbs up and the brows, well, it’s brows so I’m not getting overly excited, but let’s just say that I’m keeping them close at hand.

Available as of June 2 at all CHANEL beauty counters
