One of the newest releases from CHANEL, is the limited edition Sautoirs de Coco Collection which draws inspiration from Mademoiselle’s well-known love of pearls (‘sautoirs’ is French for string of pearls’). That being said, you can immediately see why the star piece is undoubtedly the Perles et Fantaisies Illuminating Powder with its incredibly lifelike pearl strand embossing on its surface. I have to confess, it took a lot of willpower on my part to actually touch a brush to this jewel, but I’m so glad that I did.

Perles et Fantaisies Illuminating Powder, Limited Edition (CAN $76.00) | A dual-toned highlighting face powder in pearly white to add radiance and icy pink to brighten, and where each shade can be worn either individually or combined. The exceptionally fine-milled powder seems to melt into the skin while adding a subtle luminosity in that magical way that only CHANEL knows how to create. The pearl strand pattern embossed on the surface is absolutely spectacular to behold and the raised sections almost act as ‘guards’ in keeping the two colours from merging into each other upon swirling a brush through them. There is an included mini brush with angled natural bristles (in its own velour sleeve) that works surprisingly well, but I still prefer using my own brushes for application.
Created with CHANEL’s inherent principles of elegance, Perles et Fantaisies is a highlighter of the softly-lit variety and never over the top so if bling is your cup tea, don’t look for it here. Both shades appear to lean slightly cool but are surprisingly compatible with a wide range of skin tones (I’m light-medium and I find that neither colour clashes with my complexion) and each has this finely ground opalescence you can see in the macro shots below, which translates into more of a radiance once applied. Another bonus is in that with the powder being ground this fine, it doesn’t appear to emphasize pores (at least, not on my skin). Staying power is about 8+ hours when worn over foundation, less so on bare skin, and will fuse beautifully with your skin’s warmth and natural oils.
Note that in the swatch photo below, all shades have been applied with a heavy hand so the colours can show up; the effect is much more fine and delicate when worn.
My love affair with highlighters is still going strong but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate the positive effect that touches of radiance have upon my skin. Apart from imparting luminosity to key areas, the finely ground pearlescent finish of Perles et Fantaisies relies on the principle of light reflection and works to detract the eye from shadows upoon the skin, adding an enhancement factor instead. Naturally, it’s quite pricey in comparison to other highlighters available but if you’re one to shy from too much brilliance, then I highly suggest giving this one a look. You might say that Perles et Fantaisies is like strobing’s refined sister, done the CHANEL way.
