The venerable beauty house of Estée Lauder has had a baby; introducing The Estée Edit, a range of colour cosmetics and skincare that launches March 15th and will be sold exclusively at Sephora (some products are already available on their website). With It- girl Kendall Jenner and cool-girl beauty blogger Irene Kim as the faces behind the brand, The Estée Edit is aiming to get a big chunk of the Millenial pie and from the initial look of things, I’d say that they’re definitely onto something big.
Turn Up and Turn Down Lip Flip Shade Transformers are not your average lipsticks, and while they can certainly be worn on their own (all depending on how game you are for edgy lips), their true calling is in layering to create a custom colour – and therefore, making each of these not only unique in the world of lipsticks, but quite versatile too. Oh yeah, the killer electric-blue metallic packaging and vanilla-minty scent aren’t too shabby, either.

01 Turn Up Lip Flip Shade Transformer (CAN $26.00) | A vivid lemon yellow hue that when applied over lipstick, is designed to lighten the colour. The texture is actually very creamy and glides easily along the lips, but that very same emollience also causes it to apply somewhat patchy when worn on its own; one solution is to cover lips with foundation first to create an anchoring base – but that’s only if you plan on wearing it solo. Applied over other lipstick shades, the warm tones of Turn Up impart a unique new colour while also serving to give matte lip products a hydrating boost as well.
02 Turn Down Lip Flip Shade Transformer (CAN $26.00) | A lustrous black hue with buildable opacity, looking like sheer charcoal with one swipe but quickly becoming opaque with a second pass. Due to its more pigmented nature, Turn Down works much more effectively over medium to medium-dark colours (i.e.: anything from dark pink to deep reds+), giving them a lush look, although I did find it to muddy things up when paired with lighter colours (such as icy pink or anything in the nude/neutral range). Personally, I’m actually loving the look of this on its own – something I did not expect.
Ciaté London Cashmere x Olivia Palermo Satin Kiss Lipstick Collection (reviewed here):
- with Turn Up – creates a warm caramel nude
- with Turn Down – creates a stone grey shade, needs to be mixed well to avoid streaks
Charlotte Tilbury Love Liberty Matte Revolution Lipstick (reviewed here):
- with Turn Up – creates a deep creamy rose
- with Turn Down – creates a brown-tinged burgundy
MAC All Fired Up Retro Matte Lipstick:
- with Turn Up – creates the deepest coral/pink
- with Turn Down – creates an intense plum
The concept is interesting and I have no doubt that these two lippies will sell out quickly. Quality wise, I find that Turn Up performs best when layered over other shades (but falls short when worn alone), while Turn Down seems to really take the stage when applied over more saturated shades. Both bring a whole new shade-range to the table, but you do need to wipe them down between combinations … a small price to pay for one-of-a-kind customizable colour.
So, who’s feeling these? Let the discussion begin!
