Interesting fact: Selena Quintanilla-Perez’s posthumous original collaboration with MAC ranks as one of the top-selling collections in cosmetics history. I’ll let that sink in for a minute. Now, I confess to not knowing much about the late artist — other than the fact that she was not only incredibly talented, but tragically killed in the prime of her life — but I wasn’t going to pass on this stunning piece from her second collection with MAC, aptly titled Selena La Reina.

La Leyenda Extra Dimension Skinfinish, limited edition (CAN $41.00) | The silver holographic outer packaging with its embossed and raised rose, is only the start of the beautiful detailing. The compact is made from sturdy cardboard that closes magnetically and comes adorned with a pattern of raised holographic studs — in homage to the bedazzled bras Selena wore on stage and which she actually created herself, no less. Once opened, another nice touch is the protective film with the artist’s image. But the pièce de résistance is the actual product within: an absolutely exquisitely rendered raised rose. The pearlescent gold shade of this highlighter is definitely warm leaning and has been created to suit a broad range of skin tones, although I suspect those with the fairest complexions might only be able to make it work as a shimmery bronzer. Richly pigmented it is nonetheless easy to blend out (or build up), with a gossamer-light texture which lays down beautifully along the skin, leaving behind a lustrous sheen and no glittery bits. Worn over primer/foundation, staying power is excellent, almost seeming to get better as it merges with your skin’s natural warmth.
A part of me almost doesn’t want to use this highlighter so I don’t “ruin” it, but what’s the point of owning something so beautiful if you can’t enjoy it, am I right? In the end, it comes down to performance — something that La Leyenda definitely lives up to. Of course, the entire collection is limited edition and if there’s one piece to own, this one is it so … move quickly, my friends.
