Fun fact: originally created in 1959 by Thomas Dam of Denmark (the dolls were known as Dam Trolls), who carved the doll out of wood for his daughter since he couldn’t afford to buy her a Christmas gift. Demand grew as other children all wanted one and the rest is history.
MAC Good Luck Trolls | Pigment, Glitter & Reflects Glitter
Pigment, Glitter & Reflects Glitter (CAN $27.50/each) | All four shades are actually part of the permanent range (only the packaging for this collection is limited), with the glitters suitable for both face & hair (although care should be taken to not get the product into eyes), while the pigment is ultra colour-saturated, long-lasting and comes to a brilliant finish. For better staying power and effect, the glitters should be applied with a mixing medium although you may still experience some fall-down (best to work with them before doing the rest of your face makeup).
- Chartreuse – true chartreuse with a foil-like shine
- Fuchsia – dark and vivid purple glitter
- Reflects Transparent Teal – brilliant teal with a pink shift
- Reflects Purple Duo – cornflower blue with a pink shift
What makes these products so interesting to me, is their transformative ability especially when layered over other shadows. Even the smallest amount strategically placed, will make your makeup look stand out, and while intense they can still be made to work casually as well – it’s all about experimenting & having fun.

Lipglass (CAN $19.50/each) | Apart from the boldly vivid colours, I admit to being pretty mesmerized by the smooth glitter caps of these glosses (I mean, just look at them!). The formula is the brand’s classic staple: slightly thick but with a buttery smooth application, a touch tacky but not overly sticky, glitter/shimmer that lays down flat (not gritty) and bearing a yummy vanilla-candy scent.
- Bubble Butt – electric pink with silver & hot pink fine glitter
- Twerquoise – icy blue with a pink/purple shift
- Glitter Grunge – grape with silver & purple fine glitter
The obvious odd shade here is Twerquoise and while worn alone it does give my lips a rather hypothermic look, I actually like the way it looks patted down or applied over other shades to create some pretty amazing colour combos. Glitter Grunge is interesting to wear solo & looks amazing layered over a deep burgundy lipstick. Pink is not my go-to shade but I actually liked Bubble Butt (that name!) over a taupe liner – very unique when worn that way.

Black Tied Eye Shadow (CAN $20.50) | This shade is also part of the permanent range, although shown with the limited edition packaging here. One of the brand’s best-sellers, this is a rich charcoal black with ultra finely-ground shimmer that can flash pink/green under some lighting, in a frost finish. The texture is a little dry but still easy to work with and quite blendable, although I find that it really comes into its own when applied with a dampened brush (totally brings out its prismatic side).

Play It Proper Beauty Powder (CAN $32.50) | A silky soft face powder in a very finely-milled texture with a ‘pearlized’ finish, and which can be used all over or as a highlighter. I was actually not expecting this powder to blend out as beautifully as it does, without any residue kicked up when swirling my brush across its surface. I’m not sure I’d use this as an all over face product, but I do love it along the tops of cheekbones for a melt-into-the-skin type of radiance (which it does without emphasizing pores either).

187 SH Duo Fibre Face Brush (CAN $52.00) | Also available in both the long & short handled formats in the permanent range, this version is made unique via the limited edition colourful packaging. The bristles are exceptionally soft and their alternating lengths help provide a diffused application. My new favourite way to use this brush is with bronzer, especially the more shimmery type such as MAC’s Highly Illogical Trip The Light Fantastic Face Powder – gives skin the prettiest glow without being obnoxious.

There may have been some eye-rolling involved when the press release for this collection landed in my inbox but when I was able to preview everything up close & personal back in late May, I confess that…I liked it. Liked quite a few of the products, actually. Here’s a perfect case of appearances looking deceptive because despite the eccentric colours, the finishes make the products (at least the ones I tried) not only eminently wearable, but most offer some type of transformative property as well. I’m still creeped out by the little troll dolls, however (and before you ask, the little guy shown here was a gift ∗shudder∗).
