The 88th Academy Awards presentation was held at the Dolby Theater in L.A. this past Sunday and even with controversy swirling, that old Hollywood saying never rang truer: the show must go on. Hosted by comedian Chris Rock (who did an amazing job and managed to successfully put out several fires while simultaneously cracking everyone up), there was no shortage of glamour present.
It’s become something of an ommorphia tradition to showcase some of my favourite red carpet looks of the event, and this year may just be my favourite yet; the gowns were elegantly spectacular without being over the top and while primary shades were abundant, there was also patterning seen via the use of sequins, strategic beadwork, as well as lace. Hairstyles were polished yet effortless, appearing eminently touchable and varied from softly classic updos to tousled beachy waves. Nails were – not surprisingly – seen mainly in nude tones, with [rare] pops of colour: nothing that would compete with the gown, right? The makeup looks can be summed up in one word: sublime. We saw a return to ‘pretty’ on so many faces, with any excesses either via a bold lip (that was balanced by neutral eyes) or heavy liner (again, balanced by neutral lips).
The highlight of the night, was undoubtedly Leonardo DiCaprio and his win for Best Actor. Can we all now breathe a collective sigh of relief? Apparently the 6th time is the charm, and he accepted his Oscar graciously and with a heartfelt plea to the world regarding the state of our planet. Congrats and well done, Leo – on all counts!
I hope you enjoy the following selections!

Priyanka Chopra in a Zuhair Murad embroidered lace gown
Chrissy Teigan wearing a Marchesa gown with husband John Legend
Matt & Luciana Damon, both wearing Versace (don’t they look like the sweetest couple?)
Naomi Watts with husband Live Schreiber (who can also double as the perfect bodyguard)
Sly Stallone & Jennifer Flavin (giving her best Angelina leg pose), both in Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane
Wrapping up this year’s Oscars, I have a few favourites; Cate Blanchett’s Armani gown was beyond breathtaking and brought to mind a colony of butterflies about to take flight (sounds odd, but think of the imagery). J-Law’s newly blondified locks totally rocked the red carpet, while Charlize Theron’s scarlet gown with its dangerously plunging neckline ruled. The men cleaned up beautifully as well (like being in a room stuffed with tuxedo-clad James Bonds), while several baby bumps were proudly on display. At the end of the day, I appreciate all the many components that have gone into getting the look just right – all for that one fleeting moment on the red carpet. Butterflies in flight, I tell you.
