Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Deliciously Shiny Nail Colour

Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire opener

Several weeks ago I was invited to attend a very special event: an advance look at the latest Spring launches from one of my favourite brands, Guerlain. Having heard the rumours for months about a new makeup range, I absolutely could not wait to set eyes on the new La Petite Robe Noire nail lacquers and lipsticks (review forthcoming on the latter), and trust me when I say that this collection is everything I hoped for … and more.

After the incredible success of Guerlain’s La Petite Robe Noire fragrance launch, several more iterations of this unique scent were to follow with the next logical step being to create a colour cosmetics range that embodies the many facets of the Guerlain ‘La Petite Robe Noire‘ woman. First out of the gate, are the Deliciously Shiny Nail Colour (CAN $27.00), and I couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with these stunning heart-adorned little beauties.

Guerlain nail polish ranks as one of my absolute favourite formulations and in my opinion, also has one of the best brushes out there (the other being Dior, hands down) and so when I learned that this new collection would be replacing the existing range, my heart literally stopped for a second; thankfully, the powers that be at Guerlain definitely understand not to mess with a good thing, unless it’s to make it better. Which they most definitely managed to do.

The new range comes in black boxes with silver as opposed to gold lettering, and while the price has remained the same, the quantity has dropped somewhat (from 10 ml to 8.8 ml), not significant but still worth mentioning. The shape of the bottle has gone from rectangular to more square, and comes dressed with a removable upside-down heart cap echoing that of its namesake fragrance bottle. The wand is commensurate to the bottle size (and therefore shorter than before) although the brush remains similar in dimension to its predecessor but without the bevelled and chiseled shape of before, being somewhat more splayed out instead – but application is effortless just the same. The biggest change, however, is that this formula is now scented; when the solvents evaporate after application the ‘sweet gourmand fragrance with accents of red berries and petals‘ is in line with La Petite Robe Noire’s original accord, and can linger for about 24 hours but can be refreshed anew with a layer of top coat. The specific resin in the formula provides a suppleness and elasticity to the film, delivering a gloriously shiny and long-lasting, chip-free finish.

Guerlain My First Nail Polish swatch

#001 My First Nail Polish | A ballerina pink sheer base filled with pink and iridescent micro-glitter in a formula that is the thickest of the four shown with an absolutely perfect density and flow. Self levelling, naturally glossy & never opaque, this shade gives a dainty sheer wash of colour to nails, but in a totally sophisticated way. Can also be layered over any other shade for a touch of subtle sparkle.

Guerlain Pink Tie swatch

#002 Pink Tie | A colour drenched hot cerise pink crème hue in a formula that is somewhat thinner than My First Nail Polish, but which defines perfection: falling in a self-levelling way, can almost be a one-coater, and comes to a super glossy finish. The vivid colour straddles neon territory in its intensity, but manages to stay adultly wearable just the same. Bonus: non-staining upon removal

Guerlain Red Heels swatch

#003 Red Heels | A saturated red hue with an excellent combination of both cool and warm tones (and thus wearable by basically all skin tones across the board), in yet another STELLAR formula: buttery smooth application, über-glossy finish, and so pigment rich that you can basically get away with one coat for full opacity. Bonus: non-staining upon removal (for a red? consider me IMPRESSED).

Guerlain Black Perfecto detail

Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire | #007 Black Perfecto

Guerlain Black Perfecto swatch

#007 Black Perfecto | Definitely the most complex and unique of the group, this shade is going to disappear off the shelves, believe me. A charcoal semi-sheer base filled with ultra fine burgundy shimmer in a perfectly balanced formula. Self-levelling like the rest and with a brilliant shine at the finish, perfect opacity is reached by the second coat. Appearing near-black in low light (or rather, more like a blackened cherry hue), this shade really comes into its own once sunlight hits it and picks up all the shimmery bits. Drop. Dead. GORGEOUS.

Guerlain is a brand that takes pride in every single aspect of their products and formulations, and it shows. With the release of the La Petite Robe Noire collection of nail colour, they have set the bar incredibly high for other brands to follow, and after having played with these shades for several weeks now, I can sum it up in one word: WOW. The shorter wand of the brush takes a bit of getting used to and even with the bristles differently shaped than before, application is still ridiculously effortless. With eight available shades (there are 2 that are exclusives to Asia and/or International), I sincerely hope that more are already in the planning. Verdict: you will so need to dress up your nails with La Petite Robe Noire.

Not shown in the post, is the new base and top coats (which are now verging on Holy Grail status for me).

Available April 1st at Guerlain counters and select boutiques across Canada. Find more information via guerlain.com

Essie | Winter & Luxe Effects 2015 Collections

Essie Winter & Luxe Effects 2015 opener

Back in August, I was privileged to have been given both the Winter 2015 and Luxe Effects 2015 collections but as we were still in the grip of summertime heat, I was in no position to really appreciate the inspiration behind these shades. Fast forward to right now with winter fully upon us, and I’m totally loving these beauties. Yes, I like to be seasonally appropriate that way. Sometimes.

With the bottles of both collections arrayed in front of me, I was inspired to create a combination post, and something about the tones of the Luxe Effects shades made it so easy, helping to make my limited nail art skills appear that much more intricate. As a self-professed colour-purist (and mega glitter-avoider), no one was more surprised than me to find how much FUN I had. It might be time for me to rethink my stance on glitter.

Essie Luxe Effects 2015

Essie | Luxe Effects 2015 Collection

Essie Peak Show swatch

Peak Show | A white-based icy pink crème hue in a formula that shows good density and flow. Since the first coat will probably be a touch patchy, I suggest 3 thin layers for a perfectly even & opaque finish. Confession: this is my absolutely fave way to wear pink (and yes, I’m somewhat obsessed with any variation of white nail polish).

Coats: 3 (thin) plus top coat

Essie Virgin Snow swatch

Virgin Snow | If clouds had a baby with lilacs, this is the colour they’d produce (as weird as that sounds, I stand by it). A similar formula to Peak Show but with better opacity, this is is a blue-leaning baby lilac hue with grey undertones – the entire combination seeming somehow muddied up, and just so.damn.beautiful. It’s really like looking at a twilit sky reflecting on pristine snow (totally waxing poetic here). Love x billion for this shade.

Coats: 2 plus top coat

Essie Frilling Me Softly swatch

Frilling Me Softly | (over Virgin Snow) A clear base filled with silver bar and hexagonal glitter pieces (small, medium & large). As each brush stroke pulls out quite a healthy scoop of glitter, there’s no fishing around needed, although you may need to nudge some bar glitter into place if it passes the nail’s free edge. Of course, I just had to mattify things as well – which is in fact my fave way of wearing glitter, as a matte coat makes everything look more modern and makes any glitter pieces stand out uniquely.

Coats: 1 (no top coat)

Essie Frilling Me Softly swatch matte

Essie Altitude Attitude swatch

Altitude Attitude | A colour-saturated watermelon red hue with magenta undertones in a crème-jelly hybrid formula. Amazing flow & density, making application a breeze and leaves behind an über-glossy finish that really doesn’t even need top coat (see the difference: my ring finger has no top coat added). As there is a stain potential, don’t skip on base coat first.

Coats: 2 plus top coat (except ring finger)

Essie Tassel Shaker swatch

Tassel Shaker | (over Altitude Attitude) A clear base filled with copper, gold and bronze fine bar glitter strands. There’s a good amount of glitter per brush stroke to provide good coverage, without any extra fishing needed. Something about these Luxe Effects shades inspire me and I couldn’t help but play; as seen in the above swatch, it’s quite easy to create number of looks with Tassel Shaker, from dots (which wound up looking like stars due to the bar glitter – a happy coincidence), stripes, all over application, or just on the tips for a shimmery touch. If I can do it, anyone can.

Essie Haute Tub swatch

Haute Tub | A mid-sheer blackened base hue filled with multi-chrome ultra fine shimmer (predominantly magenta-coloured, but with flashes bronze, green, purple and blue seen at some angles). The hybrid crème-jelly formula leans on the thick side but is still very easy to work with (and has the benefit of not pooling into cuticles or along nail sides), falling in a self-levelling way and finishing up glossy. Bonus: non-staining upon removal. I couldn’t resist adding a matte top coat to see what effect I’d get (so much love for this finish), then even played around with some free-hand nail art via a flashy silver tip using Apres-Chic.

Coats: 2 plus top coat (as well as matte top coat)

Essie Apres-Chic swatch

Apres-Chic | A white-based metallic silver in one of the best formulas to date that I’ve come across for this type of polish. Naturally, a steady hand is needed to avoid any potential visible brush strokes but the formula seems to level things out as it dries, turning it quite even-looking all on its own. Like newly-forged steel (makes me think of sword blades), the brilliance can be blinding in direct light – so gorgeous, and really doesn’t benefit from added top coat (except for protection purposes). There will probably be some shimmer spread upon removal, so be warned (but who cares – the finish makes it worth the effort). Bonus: this makes an excellent nail art shade as well – think: silver gradient tips.

Coats: 2 plus top coat (except ring finger)

Essie Fringe Factor swatch

Fringe Factor | (over Apres-Chic) A clear base filled with plum bar glitter. The formula here was the thickest of the four Luxe Effects and while it worked in my favour to create this ombré look, you’ll probably need to go in with a couple of coats for allover coverage. For the above look and working backwards (from the tip up), I applied the first coat, concentrating more along the edge. A second coat of glitter was again added to just the edge and spread out (more like’ shmooshed’ out using the brush), with everything topped off by a layer of top coat which smooths things out and covers any demarcation lines.

Essie Shall We Chalet swatch

Shall We Chalet? | One word: SPECTACULAR. Yes, it’s a red and we all have about a zillion reds in our stash, but this blue-based hue is still amazing regardless. A hybrid crème/jelly formula, this colour-drenched shade applies in a completely self-levelling way and finishes up with a mirror-like glossy shine (once again, ring finger is left bare of top coat to show how intense the gloss truly is). Any staining potential is quite low, but I wouldn’t skip on base coat just the same.

Coats: 2 plus top coat (except ring finger)

Essie Fashion Flares swatch

Fashion Flares | (over Shall We Chalet?) A clear base filled with metallic magenta bar glitter as well as black hexagonal glitter (small, medium & large). Let me begin by saying that I was blown away with Fashion Flares on so many levels: application was superb with good coverage by even the first coat, and I became slightly obsessed with the textured & multi-level effect it gives to nails. Just when I thought it couldn’t get better, the matte layer  I added for the last swatch, took things up several notches and really made the glitter pattern stand out in a stylized artistic way. Just, WOW.

Coats: 2 plus top coat, and matte top coat added last.

With the spring collections about to make their debut all over counters, there’s thankfully still time to scoop up any (or all) of these shades. Essie’s entire Winter 2015 Collection is a big hit for me, with absolutely zero duds in the bunch. Peak Show and Virgin Snow are absolutely breathtaking and will be still wearable once the warmer weather hits, while both Haute Tub (don’t you just love that name?) and Apres-Chic each have a totally unique appeal. Even the two red shades have their merits, although if forced to pick one, I’d say that Shall We Chalet? is well worth adding to your stash. The bar glitter of Luxe Effects may not be everyone’s cup of tea (I’ve never been a big fan … until now), but there’s no denying how much interest they can add to your existing mani – and you don’t even need to go all out; a simple accent nail will do. See? Fun & easy-peasy.

NARS x Steven Klein | Fantascene Nail Polish Collection

NARS Steven Klein nail polish opener

With the Spring collections arriving fast & furiously at counters, there’s still time to nab some Holiday lovelies, such as this trio of lacquers from the NARS x Steven Klein Fantascene Collection that were recently released for the holidays. For a collaboration between two such artistically provocative & eccentric minds as that of François Nars and celebrated photographer Steven Klein, these nail polishes are surprisingly…wearable. Who would have thought?

Burberry Beauty|Cadet Green, Khaki Green & Poppy Black

Burberry Fall polishes opener

Something about Burberry Beauty just speaks to me on so many levels; from the crisp & clean packaging to the actual products themselves, this range continues to impress me with their attention to detail and quality. Released as part of the Fall 2015 Beauty collection, these military hues were inspired by the Burberry Camouflage bucket Bag a signature piece from the Autumn/Winter 2015 runway show (and which I’m totally coveting), but are colours that also happen to be so totally on point for Spring 2016.

Details: housed in a rectangular bottle with a removal outer gunmetal cap etched with the iconic Burberry plaid design, the brush is on the dense side but splays extremely well and is suitable even for those with narrower nail beds.

Burberry Cadet Green swatch

N° 206 Cadet Green, Limited Edition (CAN $23.00) | A cool leaning (blue based) green hue in a medium-thin almost hybrid-like (crème/jelly) formula that can be runny if your brush is loaded up too much (which could then result in potential flooding of cuticles). Barring that, this shade has amazing pigmentation and flow, falling in a self-levelling way and leaving behind an insanely glossy finish. Bonus: non-staining upon removal.

Coats applied: 2, plus top coat

Burberry Khaki Green swatch

N°205 Khaki Green, Limited Edition (CAN $23.00) | A true military green hue in a similar formula to Cadet Green, but slightly more sheer at the first coat. Warmer-leaning (due to a yellower base), the depth of tone builds up beautiful and offers complete opacity by the second layer, along with a self-levelling application and brilliant high-shine finish.

Coats applied: 2, plus top coat

The first thing that both Cadet Green and Khaki Green made me think of, were Les Khakis de CHANEL (released in 2010, now discontinued) the military-hued trio created for Fashion Night and which sold out at the speed of light. Naturally, I had to pull mine out of the vault to compare, and as the swatches below show, they’re really nothing alike:

Burberry Poppy Black swatch

N299 Poppy Black (CAN $23.00) | A deep ebony black hue with a formula that borders on perfection at every level: density, flow, opacity and brilliance. Everyone needs a good black in their nail polish wardrobe (instantly adds an edgy chicness to nails while frequently being the basis for many nail art designs) and Poppy Black is giving Camelot from a-england, my long-standing fave black, some serious competition. Bonus: non-staining upon removal.

Coats applied: 2, plus top coat (although the finish is beyond glossy on its own)

Interestingly, this trio happens to be my first Burberry polishes, but something tells me that they won’t be my last. These colours are both modern and classic, and while Cadet Green and Khaki Green were both limited edition shades, a quick search shows that they’re still available (I’ve included a few links below). Poppy Black is a permanent hue – a good thing, as this is one totally amazing black and well worth adding to your beauty arsenal.

Burberry Beauty products are available through The Bay & thebay.com, Sephora & sephora.com, Nordstrom and www.nordstrom.com locations across Canada. Find more information via www.ca.burberry.com

Guerlain | 903 Nuit Merveilleuse, Neige et Merveille Holiday Collection

Guerlain Nuit Merveilleuse opener

As my first post of 2016, I couldn’t think of a more appropriate beauty item to set the tone with, than 903 Nuit Merveuilleuse (French for ‘marvellous night’) from Guerlain’s Neige et Merveille Collection for Christmas 2015. Apart from the fact that Guerlain polishes have quickly become some of my favourites (if you’ve yet to try their brush, then prepare for shock + awe), there’s that something undefinable that gives this shade such a hypnotic appeal. Then there’s the meaning behind purple:

Purple combines the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red. The colour purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic

What better way to start off the new year, than with a colour that embodies so much?

Guerlain Nuit Merveilleuse 2

903 Nuit Merveilleuse, Limited Edition (CAN $29.00) | A vivid electric purple hue filled with magenta and purple fine glitter flecks as well as matching finely ground shimmer. The formula is somewhat thickish and jelly-like in consistency but still easy to work with, helping it stay exactly where placed without pooling at the cuticles or nail sides. Semi sheer at the first coat, you can achieve a pretty good opacity by loading up your brush – although I personally recommend 2 thinner coats instead for the smoothest look. Self-levelling at application, the finish is quite glossy even without the addition of top coat. BONUS: non-staining upon removal.

Coats applied: 2, plus base (Nailift) & top coat

Nailift La Base Base Coat (CAN $31.00) | Used in these swatches here, this base coat is meant to not only create the smoothest surface for nail polish adherence, but may also help strengthen and fortify your nails with continued use. Some of the ingredients include:

Argan Oil: Smooths nails
Vitamin E: Strengthens nails
DMU: Targets the keratin of the nail to support stronger nails
DSB: Derived of silica; provides hydration

Released this past Fall (2015), Nailift La Base has quickly risen to the top of my list where base coats/nail care is concerned; for starters we have Guerlain’s trademark bevelled brush that fans out so perfectly across the nail for basically 1-stroke coverage. The density and flow of this formula also borders on perfection, being neither too thin (runny) or thick, enabling it to provide the smoothest surface along the nail, while the glossy finish means you can even wear Nailift on its own for a clean & simple nail look. The biggest downside: the dreaded limited edition status.

To quote Buddy from Elf, this shade is so “purpley” and even if the amazing formula weren’t enough, that magnetic colour alone is beyond irresistible. Guerlain’s entire Neige et Merveilles Collection for Christmas 2015 was one of the most stellar releases of the season and while it may be hard to pick out one star piece out of all that awesomeness, 903 Nuit Merveilleuse might just take the title, in my opinion. I understand that this limited edition beauty sold out fairly quickly when it launched, but with a little perseverance you may still be able to track a bottle down at some counters – just be warned that the Spring collection has already started making an appearance.

On another note, I’m all for starting a petition to have Guerlain make Nailift permanent; it doesn’t make sense to me that something THIS amazing is limited edition, especially since it is a core and absolutely necessary step for a mani/pedi. Who’s with me on this?
