CHANEL · Neon Wave Collection

Inspired by vivid pop culture, CHANEL has just released Neon Wave, a capsule collection comprised of four muted eyeshadows in the brand’s new formula, that act as the perfect balance for the four retina-searing nail lacquers. Once again, CHANEL has managed to surprise me (not easy to do, given the scope of products I see) and what’s more, is showing incredible foresightedness with this bold move. Oh, and let’s just say that this is the first time I’ve ever actually wanted to wear neon along my nails.

Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow, limited edition (CAN $40.00/each) | Serving as counterfoil to the fluorescent nail polish shades of this collection, these four eyeshadows are in the brand’s new powder formula that combines good pigmentation with effortless blendability. All for shades are said to be a satin finish, but there’s enough shimmer thrown in to keep things interesting. All wear beautifully over primer, staying true until removed and can also be applied with a dampened brush for even more intensity, or combined to create unique new colour combos.

  • Ray – oyster shell
  • Beat – soft copper
  • Pulse – muted eggplant
  • Trance – oxidized olive

Le Vernis Longue Tenue, limited edition (CAN $32.00/each) | All four shades display several common features, namely a self-levelling application, excellent opacity, a jelly-esque texture, and a rubberized-looking finish. Trying to capture how vivid they are in person was quite a challenge for my camera, as it seemed to want to tone them down but trust me when I say: they’re hella bright. Bonus: all are non-staining upon removal.

On all shades: 2 coats & Le Gel Coat Top Coat (see second photo)

  • Ultrasonic – traffic cone neon orange (also the thickest formula of the group)
  • Fantastic – popping green
  • Magnetic – über-pink (also makes me think of pink Popsicles)
  • Electric – intense Mediterranean blue

Never in a million years would I have thought CHANEL would go in this direction, but then again I should have almost expected that this brand would buck the trend. Personally, I feel that this is neon done in a rather sophisticated way and while incredibly vivid, all four hues manage to also be wearable. That, my beauties, is CHANEL magic at work. As to the eyeshadows, I’m glad that they’re not crazy bright because while you can get away with wearing fluorescent colours on nails, the same is definitely not as easy to pull off along eyes (not that you can’t, mind you). Shades on.
