Launched almost simultaneously with the La Pausa Spring-Summer 2022 Collection (reviewed here), CHANEL released La Comète — a collection inspired by Gabrielle Chanel’s first and only high jewelry designs launched in 1932, ‘Bijoux de Diamants‘. Representing Mademoiselle’s lucky number, five timeless themes were chosen, with the crowning piece being the spectacular ‘La Comète‘ necklace. So while I may never be able to own the jewelry, I’m definitely happy to add the makeup versions to my collection.

Blush Comète Soft Glow Blush, limited edition (CAN $90.00/each) | Bearing golden double C’s on the lid, each compact also comes with a brush housed in its own velour pouch. The magic really begins the moment you open them up: designed using ‘lenticular printing’, they feature an optical illusion that reveals either a ‘comet’ (I see a star) or the House’s iconic double C logo. Both patterns are pressed into the ridged powder and are visible individually when reflected in the compact’s mirror. HOW COOL IS THAT?! With an incredibly fine milled texture and lovely subtle fragrance, both are beautifully pigmented (in their own way) and also blend effortlessly along the skin, leaving behind a truly luminous glow that only seems to get better with wear.
Pêche Cosmique* | This may be labelled a “blush”, but in my opinion it’s definitely a highlighter. The soft peach/golden hue imparts a delicate glow to the skin, similar to the effect of the Éclat du Désert Illuminating Powder (released Summer 2020 & reviewed here, no longer available): luminous yet still very ‘natural’ looking and never over the top.
Corail Étoilé* | The deeper hue of the patterned bits combined with the vivid coral of the rest of the blush form an intense pink/coral shade that provides the most beautiful bloom of fresh colour to cheeks. As much as it pained me to actually mar the surface, I’m glad I did because this might very well be my new favourite blush.
Rouge Allure Velvet La Comète, limited edition (CAN $60.00/each) | Each lipstick comes in the brand’s inimitable click case with a “comet” (I still see a ‘star’) embossed on top. This new luminous velvet finish bears a unique twist: ultra fine shimmer for a touch of subtle shine. The texture is creamy smooth, gliding effortlessly along lip contours and displays excellent colour saturation. In the campaign shot above, model Vittoria Ceretti wears 178 Brun Céleste which happens to be the only shade of the 5 here that I found could benefit from a matching liner layered underneath in order to achieve that kind of full opacity. That said, I actually prefer applying this with a lighter hand, as I find it makes a shade this dramatic so much more wearable. Staying power will be shade-dependant, but all wear beautifully and impart an excellent hydration to lips.
Eight shades in total. Not shown: 118 Bois de Rose Astral, 138 Rouge Vie Radiant, 168 Pourpre Étoilé
- 108 Terre d’Étoiles – mauve brown with gold & bronze shimmer
- 128 Rose Éclatant – vivid pink with gold shimmer
- 148 Rouge Cosmique* – red with gold & bronze shimmer
- 158 Brun Solaire – reddish brown with pink & bronze shimmer
- 178 Brun Céleste – garnet brown with silver shimmer
For 2022, CHANEL has hit the ground running and something tells me that the brand will be coming at us hard all year with impossible-to-resist launches. If you’re a collector like I am, then you’ll definitely want to add both Blush Comète shades to your collection (and use them, for God’s sake — it’s only makeup!). And how irresistible are these lipsticks? All in all, everything in this capsule collection performs beautifully, meaning you seriously can’t go wrong no matter which piece you choose. Just remember that everything is limited edition, so don’t wait too long …
